VATICAN CITY — The
signing Tuesday of a new code
of canon law by Pope John Paul
II represents 23 years of work
that reduced church regulations
but retained excommunication
for abortion and abolished le
nient marriage annulments.
The new code, the first major
revision of church rules since
1917, represents a “major sim
plification and streamlining” of
the rules that bind all Roman
Catholics, Archbishop John R.
Roach of St. Paul-Minneapolis
said Monday.
The code includes 1,700 arti
cles in seven sections and is the
work of church theologians.
The code reflects many of the
liberalizing changes in the
church since the reforms of
Vatican II in 1965.
But it retains the ban on
women priests and the automa
tic excommunication for abor
tion. It also abolishes lenient

GENERAL HOUSING
STATEMENT
The Housing Office has spaces
available for men and women in
on-campus housing for the Spring
1983 semester. These vacancies
are available due to an unusually
high number of last minute cancel
lations and no-shows. The Hous
ing Office has attempted to call
many students on the waiting list
to offer them a space but most of
them are already committed to a
lease. The breaking of any lease
or the abandonment of a room
mate is strictly discouraged, but
for those students who are living
in temporary quarters, at home, or
without a lease, please be aware
of the few available spaces on
campus. The available spaces for
both men and women are spread
among ail the halls on campus. If
interested contact the Housing Of

rules to annul a marriage which
have been followed in the Un
ited States and Australia for the
past 13 years.
Under the special rules,
which came to be known as “the
American norms,” annulment
cases did not require automatic
review' by a church marriage tri
bunal.
The new code stipulates that
all annulment decrees must be
reviewed by a panel of three
church marriage court judges.
The new code also retains
only six of the old code’s 37 ex-
communicable offenses.
One dropped offense w as the
ban on cremation. It had been
considered a pagan practice that
attempted to deny tne resurrec
tion of the body, a cornerstone
of the Roman Catholic faith.
Automatic excommunication
for joining Masonic groups also
w’as dropped from the new code.
Masonry has had a history of
strong anti-Catholicism but this
