The new code, the first major revision of church rules since 1917, represents a “major sim plification and streamlining” of the rules that bind all Roman Catholics, Archbishop John R. Roach of St. Paul-Minneapolis said Monday. The code includes 1,700 arti cles in seven sections and is the work of church theologians. The code reflects many of the liberalizing changes in the church since the reforms of Vatican II in 1965. But it retains the ban on women priests and the automa tic excommunication for abor tion.
