low sea level, and believed to be
roughly 42 million years old.
Some of the fossils repre
sented ancestral forms of animal
life that exist today. The whales,
known as zeuglodonts, are the
“tie between land and sea mam

the modern whale’s predeces-

according to SMU expert Bob
Slaughter.
Although the zeuglodonts
were more than 50 feet long,
their slender skulls made them
look “a bit more like crocodiles
than whales,” he adds. And un
like a whale, these animals could
turn their heads at the neck.
