Battalion/Page 13 January 25, 1983 Kubiak (continued from page 11) know.’ I guess I was more or less feeling sorry for myself, and he told me, ‘You can sit there at home and gripe about what hap pened to you, or you can turn around and get back up here and prove to people what you’re capable of doing.’ That’s always stuck in my mind. I got in my car that day and I drove up here, and ever since that day I made up my mind that I was going to work my butt off and prove to people that I could play and that I could be a leader on the field. I guess that’s what kept me going the past two years and more or less turned my football career around and got me back on the right foot. It happens to a lot of athletes, especially in college. Everybody that comes here is a stud out of high school — used to getting the good treatment — and then all the sudden there’s going to be somebody better than you. And if you don’t have enough inside of you to keep working until your turn comes to play, your going to end up falling off the wayside. Q. What was your most memorable moment as a quar terback at Texas A&M? A. There’s not really a parti cular one. We had the days when we threw six touchdowns, and those will always be remem bered. I feel like I was a part of the turn-around when Coach Sherrill came in. I see the direc tion that the program is head ing, and knowing that I was a senior the year that it kind of started, that means something to me. And I think being a part of Coach Sherrill and the great coaching staff he’s assembled here has been more of a high light to me than anything I’ve ever done on the football field. I do have one regret that I’ll always have. I’ve always dreamed of playing Texas on a Thanksgiving day for the right to go to the Cotton Bowl. Q. If you had picked another school — one with a pass- oriented team at that time — do you think you would have been more visible to the pro scouts by now? A. Whether it would’ve hap pened or not, we’ll never know. But if I had it to do over again, I’d do the same thing, because I got a quality education, and playing for Coach (Tom) Wilson and getting a chance to play for Jackie Sherrill for one year has done more for me than maybe any other school could have done. A year ago I would never have dreamed I was going to get a chance to be in Hawaii playing in tbe Hula Bowl and in the Blue- Oray game. And I think that had a lot to do with Coach Sherrill’s influence. Q. How much importance do you place on playing pro ball? A. I never have counted on it. J|is season, with Joe Gibbs a cohsensus choice as Coach of the Vear, the Redskins have lost just once in 12 games and enter Sun- piy’s matchup in the Rose Bowl with seven straight victories — -n-^and underdog status. The Dolphins, 10-2, have iC l| en established as 3-point favo- rites behind their “Killer Bee” defense that blanked the New York Jets, 14-0, in the confer- nre championship game. “We’re one of the best de fenses in the NFL and it’s a shame we haven’t gotten the cre dit we’re due,” says linebacker A.J. Duhe, who intercepted three Richard Todd passes, re turning one for a 35-yard score. “Maybe we’ll be noticed after we win the Super Bowl.” The Redskins like to link themselves to the, Rodney Dangerfield “No Respect” im age, too. “Other people can make deci sions on how good we are,” Gibbs says. “I’d be kidding if I said we didn’t feel slighted so far.” Washington ranked second to Miami in total yardage allowed, but the Redskins actually yielded fewer points than Miami during the regular season and they shut down the Dallas attack Saturday in a 31 -17 triumph in the NFC title game. The victory was a typical one for the Redskins, in which John Riggins bulled for 140 yards, special teams set up two touch downs and the defense applied the clincher with consecutive fourth-quarter interceptions. “We did what we had to do to win,” says center Jeff Bostic. who helped cave in the Cowboys’ interior defensive line on Rig gins’ thrusts up the middle.
