The error never was cor rected. The town's fathers, who had appropriately named it Springtown because of the in numerable springs and creeks around it, just accepted the Post Office version. Once a booming sawmill and railroad town, Stringtown today is a collection of rundown homes with only a rock crusher to call an industry. AFTERNOON 3:00© ★★★ "The Courtship Of Eddie’s Father” (1963) Glenn Situated on U.S. 69-75 half way between Dallas and Tulsa, Okla., the town had had its mo ments of glory. Bootleg whiskey distilled in hideouts on the hills around town was so much in demand that people from as far down as Texas came to buy it. "The neighbors just turned their backs because the bootleg gers were good people who were only trying to make a liv ing," said Marie Wilson, whose grandfather settled in String- town in the last century. Mrs. Wilson, who is editing a history of the town for publica tion by the Atoka County His torical Society, said, "The town had a large payroll because of the sawmilling and cattle farm ing. There were no fences in those days and the cattle and hogs roamed freely. They marked the hogs in the ears those days. There were a lot of shootings as a result of hog stealing. Bootlegging was profit able because the area was also in the midst of an oil boom. "The stills were well hidden in the hills and, if the bootlegger didn't want his still found, no body could find it. The Texas Road from Arkansas to Paris, Texas, came through this town and folks used to rest here be cause of the cold, clear and clean water around it." The first post office was estab lished Aug. 17, 1874, and the name Springtown was chosen. "But when that name was sent to the federal post office to make it official, a typographical Ford, Shirley Jones. "Another story is that a wit came to town on a stage coach, saw so many buildings strung together along the rail road and named it Stringtown, but that doesn't seem credible." The cattle and hogs are gone and the whiskey stills are silent. Oldtimers sit on their porches, ready to tell stories of the past to those who are willing to listen. But not many are left now. A correctional center, part of the state prison in nearby McAlester, is in Stringtown, but residents say the center never has posed a problem for them.
