Beginning Wednesday, the
TJ.S. Department of Agriculture
temporarily will halt the import
of Mexican limes, oranges,
grapefruit and tangerines into
five states, including Texas, to
guard against the spread of cit
rus canker.
But South Texas growers are
calling for a more stringent
embargo to guard against a
potential economic loss of hun
dreds of millions of dollars.
“If the canker spreads to
Texas, it’ll make the Medfiy and
Mexfly look insignificant,” said
Les Whitlock, manager of the
Texas Valley Citrus Committee.
“That’s why we’d like to see im
ports of Mexican citrus stopped
for the entire country until we
know more about this particular
disease strain."
The ban will prevent entrv ol
Mexican citrus only into the five
U.S. citrus-growing states. Once
sprayed to control the canker,
Mexican fruits will be allowed
into other states.
The disease weakens trees
and reduces production, infect
ing the fruit. The only recourse
is to destroy the nee, or cut it

A Dallas infant who under

after his premature birth is be

officials said.
The child’s case is only one of
a handful nationwide in which
transfusion recipients have de

Alarmed blood bank officials
Monday said current screening
procedures of donors are inade

The infant is one of an esti

the syndrome, according to Dr.
James Luby, chief of the univer

have been confirmed as AIDS
victims. Except for the child, all
the cases involve homosexual
men.
About 300 people of the 800
documented cases have died of
AIDS, said Dr. Harrold Jaffee,
assistant director of the center
task force studying the ailment.
