Forty people already were in
line shortly after midnight
Tuesday for the second day of
application.
Michael Love, asked why he
endured the cold, wind and long
line, said, “Why? Hope. That is
all I can say. They want ajob and
I want ajob.”
Applicants began lining up at
midday Sunday for the jobs,
which pay between $10.50 and
$12 per hour.
Last week in San Jose, Cali
fornia, about 45 unemployed
people took up residence under
a freeway. City, county and state
officials are unsure what to do
with them. Their tent city is simi
lar to the one outside Houston
where 200 families are living on
a riverbank.
T he San Jose tent city is
populated mostly by homeless
men who are ineligible for wel
fare shelter. James McEntee, di
rector of the Santa Clara Countv
Human Relations Commission,
said officials are seeking alterna
tives to eviction.
“Obviously we can’t let them
stay there,” he said. “The biggest
f iroblem is health. We’re looking
or a building or some other
alternative to house them."
Joseph Blan Jr., who might
have been in the Milwaukee job
line had he not moved to Cali
fornia looking for work, said he
had been unemployed for a
year.
