National Football League *ners voted Tuesday to take championship game and e hoopla that goes with it to Palo Alto, Calif., and 85,000- seat Stanford Stadium. Super Bowl XIX will be play- donjan. 20, 1985, with the NFL paying for temporary Ihting that must be installed at Stanford for the contest. In addition, the league said it tould return to New Orleans the Louisiana Superdome (orSuper Bowl XX on Jan. 26, ‘86. It will be the third Super iwl for the Superdome. In addition to the Super Bowl uinouncements, NFL commis- iionerPete Rozelle said Tuesday during the league’s annual mid- itason meeting that this year’s tonference championship james would be played on sepa- iitfdates—Jan. 22 and Jan. 23. The NFL heard Super Bowl lids earlier this year from the t»o cities that eventually won out as well as Miami; Pontiac, Mich ; Jacksonville, Fla.; Tam pa, Fla., Houston and Seattle. “The vote (on Stanford and ik Superdome) was not unani mous,'’ Rozelle said. “But it pas- . It took three-fourths of the tuners to approve the sites. Stanford has an excellent stadium and San Francisco is an attractive city in which to have ame. Stanford also has ex cellent turf — one of the best on the West Coast.” Ag Ladies to host H-S The Aggie Ladies basketball ttam will host Hardin-Simmons Thursday night at 7 p.m. in G. "ie White Coliseum. The Ladies, who have a 5-4 record, are led by sophomore ]tnni Edgar, who’s averaging 12,2 points a game. Janet Duck- lam and Kelli Harned are aver- 9.7 and 9 points a game, ttspectively, and are the leading rtbounders at 6.8 and 7.4 re- mnds a game. Coach Cherri Rapp’s team II play Idaho State and the .Pniversity of Nevada-Las Vegas tlisweekend in Las Vegas, Nev., mdwillbe in Houston Jan. 4 to llaythe Cougars in a Southwest inference opener. Rozelle said the idea of mov ing the game was also attractive to the owners. New Orleans, meanwhile, has become a famil iar stopping place for the Super Bowl and Rozelle said it was almost automatic that the game land back in the Superdome in 1986. “If we didn’t go there in 1986, we couldn’t get back in until 1990 because of conventions that have already booked,” the commissioner said. Although Miami was among the bidders, there has been sen timent among some league own ers that they did not want the Super Bowl returning to that city until rennovations were made in the Orange Bowl. “I can’t read the owners’ minds,” Rozelle said. “But that may have been the thinking of some.” The AFC and NFC cham pionship games are traditionally held on the same day — two weeks before the Super Bowl. But they were pushed back a week this year because of the NFL strike and because of that, television networks have had to adjust their programming. That, in turn, led the league to schedule the NFC champion ship game for Saturday, Jan. 22, and the AFC game the next day. They will be played at the home sites of the teams with the best records and will start at either noon or 4 p.m. CST, depending on the location and the prevail ing weather. Rozelle said that in the days following the settlement of the strike, the league was “just trying to make the best of a bad situation.” Rozelle said: “Once the play offs begin, interest will build up and help us. The first two weeks of the season we had record attendance and the first Monday night game (Pittsburgh vs. Dal las) gave us the best ratings we have ever had. “The no-shows we have now bother me, but it is understand able that it has happened.” SPECIAL Hamburger & Baked Potato FOR 2 35 and a speedy, convenient Drive-Thru window 201 DOM1NIK Good thru 16 Dec. 82 For the Magic of Christmas.
