Sherrill, Kubiak to lead
Gray in all-star classic
“^ol. 76 No
Texas A&M head football
coach Jackie Sherrill and Aggie
quarterback Gary Kubiak are
among the four coaches and
four quarterbacks who will par
ticipate Christmas Day in the
Blue-Gray All-Star Classic.
A father and son coach-
quarterback combination is also
among the four.
Game officials announced
Friday thatjim Dickey of Kansas
State will be the North’s defen
sive coach and his son, Darrell,
also of Kansas State, will be one
of the Blue team’s two quarter
backs.
The younger Dickey will
work with the other Blue quar
terback, Steve Clarkson of San
Jose.
Kansas State ended its season
Saturday night in the Independ
ence Bowl, losing to Wisconsin
14-3.
Clarkson will be accompa
nied by one of his San Jose
coaches, Jack Elway, father of
Stanford quarterback John El
way. The elder Elway will be
offensive coach for the North.
On the South side, Sherrill
will be offensive coach and Bill
Oliver of the University of Ten-
nessee-Chattanooga will lead
Quarterback Gary Kubiak
to play in Blue-Gray game
Jackie Sherrill will be
Gray’s offensive coacb
the defense.
Sherrill Finished his First year
as the Aggie head coach with a
5-6 record.
The South’s quarterbacks will
be Reggie Collier of Southern
Mississippi and Kubiak. Collier
is the only quarterback in his
NCAA division to rush and pass
for more than 1,000 yards in a
single season.
Kubiak averaged 177 yards
passing per game this season
while throwing for 1,948 yards
and 19 touchdown passes. The
senior from Houston St. Pius
was selected second team all-
Southwest Conference for his
efforts.
More West Coast players will
participate in this year’s nation
ally televised game than in past
years, said Charles Jones, execu
tive director of the Blue-Gray
Association.
He said he expects about 50
of the participating players to be
drafted by National Football
League teams. That is the same
number of classic players that
were drafted last year.
Jones also said he expects to
see more pro scouts this year be
cause of the formation of the
United States Football League.
AGGIE FACTS: Jerry Petti-
bone has been promoted to
assistant head football coach by
Sherrill, the Aggie head coach
announced over the weekend.'
Sherrill also said the rest of the
Aggies’ coaching staff will re
main intact, despite rumors that
shake-ups in the staff were
forthcoming.
The Aggies are said to be in
the running for Port Arthur Jef
ferson quarterback Craig
Stump, as well as several other
blue-chip high school prospects.
Also high on the Aggies’ list is
Fort Worth Eastern Hills run
ning back Jeff Atkins, who
rushed for 2,333 yards during
his senior season.
