sports Battalion/Pap December 13, i Sherrill, Kubiak to lead Gray in all-star classic “^ol. 76 No Texas A&M head football coach Jackie Sherrill and Aggie quarterback Gary Kubiak are among the four coaches and four quarterbacks who will par ticipate Christmas Day in the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic. A father and son coach- quarterback combination is also among the four. Game officials announced Friday thatjim Dickey of Kansas State will be the North’s defen sive coach and his son, Darrell, also of Kansas State, will be one of the Blue team’s two quarter backs. The younger Dickey will work with the other Blue quar terback, Steve Clarkson of San Jose. Kansas State ended its season Saturday night in the Independ ence Bowl, losing to Wisconsin 14-3. Clarkson will be accompa nied by one of his San Jose coaches, Jack Elway, father of Stanford quarterback John El way. The elder Elway will be offensive coach for the North. On the South side, Sherrill will be offensive coach and Bill Oliver of the University of Ten- nessee-Chattanooga will lead Quarterback Gary Kubiak to play in Blue-Gray game Jackie Sherrill will be Gray’s offensive coacb the defense. Sherrill Finished his First year as the Aggie head coach with a 5-6 record. The South’s quarterbacks will be Reggie Collier of Southern Mississippi and Kubiak. Collier is the only quarterback in his NCAA division to rush and pass for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. Kubiak averaged 177 yards passing per game this season while throwing for 1,948 yards and 19 touchdown passes. The senior from Houston St. Pius was selected second team all- Southwest Conference for his efforts. More West Coast players will participate in this year’s nation ally televised game than in past years, said Charles Jones, execu tive director of the Blue-Gray Association. He said he expects about 50 of the participating players to be drafted by National Football League teams. That is the same number of classic players that were drafted last year. Jones also said he expects to see more pro scouts this year be cause of the formation of the United States Football League. AGGIE FACTS: Jerry Petti- bone has been promoted to assistant head football coach by Sherrill, the Aggie head coach announced over the weekend.' Sherrill also said the rest of the Aggies’ coaching staff will re main intact, despite rumors that shake-ups in the staff were forthcoming. The Aggies are said to be in the running for Port Arthur Jef ferson quarterback Craig Stump, as well as several other blue-chip high school prospects. Also high on the Aggies’ list is Fort Worth Eastern Hills run ning back Jeff Atkins, who rushed for 2,333 yards during his senior season.
