McNutt said the presenta tions give the latest information about department activities. The presentations include films, filmstrips, slide shows, lectures and handouts. The department also has a restitution program in which the department collects payment for damages or property lost to a victim of a juvenile crime. Restitution is part of proba tion and is collected from the juvenile offender, McNutt said. Payment is made to the victim by the county clerk. In 1981, $6,889.15 was collected from juveniles. “Restitution makes juveniles realize the monetary loss and financial responsibility that is in volved in a crime,” McNutt said. “That’s a realization that prob ably did not occur to them at the time they committed it.” For young offenders who cannot make restitution, the probation department offers the Saturday Work Program. Some of the offenders are too young to work and earn money, and others may come from f ami lies who do not have enough money, McNutt said. The children and teenagers pick up trash, weed flower beds and plant flowers in area parks, she said. For older offenders, between the ages of 15 and 17, the de partment provides group coun seling. McNutt, who leads the sessions, said the purpose of group counseling is to help the juveniles develop better social skills, including searching and applying for employment, job interviews and dealing with peer pressure. Once a week, for six to eight weeks, juveniles attend sessions and discuss things happening in their lives that might cause prob lems. Problems mentioned often by the offenders range from family dif ficulties to school com plaints. Another form of group coun seling is the Shoplifting Diver sion Program. Juveniles who commit a sho plifting of fense attend the prog ram for an entire day, viewing films, attending lectures and forming groups to discuss they shoplifted, the peer pres ure involved and ways to shoplifting, McNutt said. The program tries to mi the needs of individual of ders and get them back on right track, McNutt said. If program is successfully con pleted (he youngster can be leased from probation, she said Wentrcek said a newjuveni probation facility will bebuiliii Bryan-College Station in aboic two years. The detention center which he said will resembleast- cure dorm area, will house juvenile offenders. Until the new facility finished, juvenile offenders art kept in a private section of tbt county jail that is used exclusive' ly for young offenders. Thearea is completely separate from adult offenders, he said. Wentrcek said the newfacilin is a holding facility — not “mini-prison.” An offenderwl is placed there will stay form more than 48 hours, he said, liij the 48-hour span, Wentrceksaid the staff hopes to have a chance to evaluate the situation and come up with a solution. United Press International PASADENA, Calif. — Every one was out of step at the Sixth Occasional Doo Dah Parade — the Cancerettes smoked cigaret tes and the nudists wore clothes. But the 40,000 spectators along Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, Calif., loved it. Peter Apanel, organizer of the parade, says the event some how “has a life of its own.” The parade is a yearly spoof on the famous Tournament of Roses parade. But none of the floats in Sunday’s paflade had a single flower, Apanel said. It’s a Doo Dah rule. The most popular group in the parade was the 20-member Precision Briefcase Drill Team, the oldest entry in the parade. The Dull Men’s Club from Newport Beach blew leaves and litter to the side along the para de route while their wives mar ched along throwing out more leaves to be swept up. 1 He blindfolded “Stay the Course” group wearing masks of President Reagan’s face per formed an uncoordinated drill. A ballet dancer wearing a tutu and doing pirouettes repre sented Reagan’s son, Ron, who is a dancer with the Joffrey Ballet. The annual conglomeration of baton droppers thrilled the crowd, and the local nudist club showed up fully dressed and dis played placards saying, “Nudes Don’t Shoot Cops” and “Have a WANTED Now you know CASH FOR OLD GOLD Class rings, wedding rings, worn out gold jewelry, coins, etc. The Diamond Room Town & Country Shopping Center No Move In Cost No Security Deposit (We will pay it for you) No Utility Deposit Perfect Roommate or Family Plan BOT On Shuttle Bus Route Security — 24 hours On Sight Maintenance • Two Tennis Courts • Two Swimming Pools • Saunas-Exercise & Weight Rooms 693-3014 Located Across From The New Post Oak Mall 1201 Hwy. 30 College Station, Texas 77840 Models & Office Open Monday-Saturday 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Managed by Brentwood Properties 693-2966 Sunday 1.00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. ' Recliners 99.95 3 Pc. The cancer society’s Cancerettes showed up wearing giant cigarette packs with brand names such as, “Slayem," “Lucky Stroke,” “Dark” and “DeMerit.” During the pre-parade festi vities, several of the Cancerettes were seen smoking cigarettes. “Well, we’re just holding ’em,” said an embarrassed parti cipant. One of the entries this year included a Tucson, Ariz., family named Duda — pronounced “doo-dah.” The Unknown Shoppers were back, and so were the shower curtain people. The grand marshals for the pa rade were members of a local bar band, Snotty Scotty and the Hankies. The Doo Dah parade was ori ginated by a band of beer drink ers who decided that Pasadena should have a New Year’s Day parade in 1978, even though it fell on a Sunday.
