TYPING 775-7017. by David Hatch Battalion Reporter The Texas Cooperative Wild life Collection, composed of more than 300,000 preserved fish, reptile, amphibian, mam mal and bird specimens, has a new home in the Sterling C. Evans Library. The new facility brings the collection together for the first time in over 30 years. The speci mens were stored in separate rooms of Nagle Hall. “This new facility doubles our floor and shelving space,” said Dr. Keith Arnold, professor of wildlife science and one of the curators of the collection. “It also provides us with optimum environmental conditions as the air conditioning system is able to keep the humidity very low and there are no windows so sunlight cannot fade any specimens. “We have been working on getting a new facility for about two years. We thought for a time that we would be getting the butcher shop in the animal in dustries building, but that was delegated to another depart ment and we were given the new facility.” The collection, now in 107B Evans Library, is accessible only by the outdoor metal stairway on the north side of the building. “The collection will be open primarily to students and re searchers,” Arnold said. “It is not a museum. It is intended to serve as a research tool, provid ing data for the faunal history of Texas, the United States and those parts of the world where A&M students and staff are con ducting research. It is not in tended for the general public’s use. “People off the street would not do much damage to a speci men in a bottle, but could se verely damage skin samples of mammals and birds because they don’t know how to properly handle them.” The specimens and data con tained in the collection are a valuable research tool, Arnold said, and the research results often have unplanned benefits. “A scientist can never tell what future use his collection may find,” Arnold said. “Egg samples collected early in the century were used to determine how extensive the egg shell dam- ROOMMATE WANTED ing is it. The data that was gathered during this experi ment was used by environmen talists to enact legislation ban ning some pesticides and con trolling the use of most others.” The wildlife and fisheries de partment is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the collection. Four curators have been designated to manage different sections: Dr. James Di xon, curator of amphibians and reptiles; Dr. David Schmidly, curator of mammals; Dr. Keith Arnold, curator of birds; and Dr. John McEachran, curator of fish. “Mainly, we have specimens from Texas and Mexico,” Arnold said. “But we have sam ples from all over the world, too. There are 200 birds from China that were collected by a former student of A&M while he was serving in a military capacity with the Chinese during the second world war. But most of our samples have been gathered by people just doing research in the field.” The collections are thorough ly indexed, he said, so that sam ples can be found quickly. Arnold also said the collection curators are preparing a grant proposal to submit to the Na tional Science Foundation. If the proposal is accepted, the foundation would provide signi ficant support to the collection over the next few years. The proposal includes a re quest for the financing of the computerization of the data associated with the specimens. “This will speed the informa tion retrieval service, especially the requests for just pure data that we often receive from other institutions,” Arnold said.
