Winters was described by a
member of the Illinois athletic
staff as “probably the best big
man to come out of Chicago.”
Winters and fellow freshman
Douglas were high school all-
Americas during their senior
seasons.
Harper, who led the Big 10
Conference in steals and assists
(six assists and 2.1 steals per
game) last season, has been pick
ed by The Sporting News as a
preseason all-America, and by
Big 10 sports writers as an all-
Big 10 choice. Under head
coach Lou Henson for the past
four years, the lllini have aver
aged 20 victories a season and
have been to three straight post
season tournaments.
Illinois lost three big scorers
from last year’s team, with James
Griffin (12 pts.), Craig Tucker
(15 pts.) and Perry Range (11
pts.) lost to graduation. In an
exhibition game earlier this
month, the lllini lost to the
Soviet national team, 77-70.
Playboy magazine has ranked
the lllini 16th in the nation to
start the season, while writers
covering the Big Ten have pick
ed the team to finish third in the
conference behind Indiana and
Iowa.
Claude Riley back to lead
A&M during senior season
ton, in 25 years as a head coach,
has a 395-273 career record.
FLORIDA (5-22):
Charles Griffin — forward, 6-6,
190, junior
Eugene McDowell — for
ward, 6-8, 225, sophomore, (9.9
pts. 8.8 reb.)
Randall Leath — center, 6-9,
215, sophomore
Nabe Palmer — guard, 5-11,
195, sophomore
George Jackson — guard, 6-5,
205, sophomore
The Gators, who lost to
Marathon Oil 81-79 in an ex
hibition matchup earlier this
month, at this point have only
one starter (McDowell) back
from last year’s squad.
McDowell had 32 points against
Marathon Oil.
As a result of their involve
ment in a recent telephone
fraud incident, 1981-82 starters
Ronnie Williams and Vernon
Delaney have been suspended
from all the team’s games this
month. Williams, a guard, was
the leading scorer in the SEC last
season, and has been picked pre
season all-SEC this year.
Delaney averaged 10.3 points
a game and 3 rebounds a game
last season. The Gators’ Rodney
Williams and Tony Rogers also
have been suspended.
Sports writers covering the
SEC have picked the Gators,
coached by Norm Sloan, to fin
ish 10th in the conference this
season. In 30 years as a head
coach, Sloan has a record of 494-
302, while at Florida for the past
eight years, he’s 102-101.
WASHINGTON (19-10):
Tim Kuiper — forward, 6-7,
195, junior
Detlef Schrempf— forward,
6-9, 200, sophomore, (3.3 pts., 2
reb.)
Paul Foiter — center, 6-9,
195, freshman
Brad Watson — guard, 6-6,
200, senior, (10.5 pts. as starting
forward last season)
Alvin Vaughn — guard, 5-11,
165, junior, (4.8 pts.)
The Huskies, who lost to the
Canadian version of the
Athletes in Action early this
month, were eliminated in the
second round of last season’s
NIT by the Aggies, 69-65.
Washington has been picked to
finish anywhere from fifth to
seventh in the Pacific 10 Confer
ence this season, while UCLA
and Oregon State should battle
for the title.
Scooter McCray — forward 6-
9, 215, senior, (3.3 pts., 3.4 reb.)
Charles Jones — center, 6-8,
220, junior, (6 pts., 3.9 reb.)
Lancaster Gordon — guard,
6-3, 185, junior, (10.6 pts., 2.3
reb.)
Milt Wagner — guard, 6-5,
185, sophomore, (4.3 pts.)
Rodney McCray and Gordon
are the only returning starters
from last year’s Denny Crum
squad, which advanced into the
third round of the NCAA tour
nament last season. Louisville,
ranked No. 5 in the nation in
UPI’s preseason poll, has been
picked to finish second in the
Metro Conference behind
Memphis State.
LOUISVILLE (23-10):
Rodney McCray — forward, 6-
7, 220, senior, (8.6 pts., 7.1 reb.)

170, junior, (5.6 pts., 2.1 reb.)
Phil Cox — guard, 5-11, 160,
sophomore, (13.5 pts., 2 reb.)
Cox, who shot 49.4 percent
from the field last season and 87
percent from the free-throw
line, was on a U.S. national team
with Turner during the past
summer. The Commodores also
lost to the Soviet national team
102-89 earlier this month.
Vandy, coached by C.M.
Newton, has been picked sixth
or seventh in the Southeastern
Conference this season. New-
