Fina planned to begin hiring replacements for the 400 strik ers Monday, but spokesman Gary Bruner said the company would rather have the strikers than new employees. “It is our hope that all of our striking employees return to work,” Bruner said. Bruner said the strikers were offered first crack at the jobs with a 9 percent raise plus be nefits as stipulated in the final contract offer made by the com pany earlier this month. Strikers were sent registered letters Friday with details of the non-union offer, but Fina also plans to run help-wanted ads in area newspapers and set up an employment office in Beaumont, Bruner said. Up to 250 to 300 people will be hired as “permanent replacements” if striking workers do not go back to work, he said. OCAW Fina spokesman Doug Dubose predicted most union members would not cross picket lines. “This will probably stengthen our group. They can see what Fina’s trying to do. They know it’s a move to break the union,” Dubose said. Bruner said “sever al” OCAW members are now working at the plant. One working OCAW mem ber, William Hinote, 51, was shot four times as he left his Port Neches home to go to work Oct. 2. Hinote is recovering from his wounds. The issue keeping the union and company from reaching a settlement is a plan to lay off about 90 employees and a Fina plan that would change the way workers are picked. Bruner called the company’s plans a move to streamline the operation. Dubose called the company’s plans “an assault on the seniority system.” The refin ery has remained in operation during the strike, being oper ated by the 190 plant super visors, Bruner said. (512) 837-5924 United Press International SPRINGFIELD, III.— Three anti-abortion crusaders from Texas known as the “Army of God” are charged with federal extortion in the abduction of an abortion clinic founder and his wife, the FBI said. Two suspects were arrested Sunday and faced hearings Monday, FBI agent Joseph E. Ondrula said. But Don B. Anderson, 42, of Pearland, is at large and considered armed and extremely dangerous. Wayne A. Moore, 18, of New Caney, was arrested at a friend’s house early Sunday, Ondrula said, and held in lieu of $1 mil lion bond. He faced a hearing Monday in federal court in Springfield. His brother, Matthew M. Moore, 20, of New Caney, was arrested late Sunday in Alvin, Ondrula said. He is being held in the Harris County Rehabilita tion Center in Houston in lieu of a $1 million cash bond. He was to appear Monday before a U.S. magistrate in Houston. The three are charged with obstructing the business of abor tion clinics owned by Dr. Hector Zevallos. Zevallos and his wife, Rosalie ean, were kidnapped from their posh Edwardsville, Ill., home Aug. 12 and released un harmed eight days later. The group, calling itself the “Army of God,” took credit for the abduction in a ransom letter and tape-recording left at a St. Louis park. The communication listed “Epistles” discussing the group’s views on abortion and the U.S. Constitution. There was no evidence to link the three with another letter fronj the “Army of God” claim ing the group had burned two Florida abortion clinics. That letter was delivered to a televi sion station in Tampa last May. U.S. Attorney Frederick Hess said money also was a motive but declined to reveal the amount the trio had sought. Ondrula said a tip from a citizen last month led the FBI to the men, who he described as transients. Moore was arrested just 20 miles from the concrete and steel bunkers in which the Zeval- loses were held during the abduction.
