Father to find asks group liver donor Rec< rece rl tA- . IM- A United Press International NEW YORK — The father of an II-month-old girl who will die before Christmas unless she receives a liver transplant pleaded with a national medical organization today for help in finding a donor. Charles Fiske of Bridgewa ter, Mass., said so far all attempts to find a donor for his blonde daughter Jamie have been fruit less. “We are racing against time," he said. Fiske said doctors told him his daughter would live only a month or two without the $ 1 ()(),()()() operation. “I am asking you to keep your eyes and ears open for a liver f or my Jamie,” Fiske said in an emo tional plea to about 1,000 mem bers of the American Pediatrics Association meeting at the New York Hilton. “We have knocked on every door and now we are appealing to you. Jamie is fighting for her life. She wants to survive,” Fiske said. Officials said Fiske’s five- minute speech was the first ever made by a layman to organiza tion members. Dr. Harvey Jennison, the association’s executive director, declined to predict the chances a liver would be found for the child, but said: “We will all re spond in whatever way we can." Library is a sailor’s salvation -m 1 1 1 1 United Press International SAUL F STE. MARIK, Michi gan — Wives and girlfriends comfort seamen on leave, but librarian Nancyann Sillers is one woman who can help a mer chant marine bide his time while crossing the inland waters. During the long hours spent rocking on cargo ships, many seamen pass the time with a novel or magazine from the American Merchant Marine Library — an institution man aged by Sillers for the past 17 years. Each American ship sailing through the Soo locks on the St. Mary’s River, which joins Lake Superior and Lake Huron, stops for a visit from Sillers. The vessels usually get two cartons of books, each contain ing 20 fiction novels, five nonfic tion books and a supply of maga zines and periodicals. “We’ve never lost a book,” boasts Sillers. “We had one book that was misplaced, but at the end of the shipping season it was found. The seaman had paid for it, but he got his money back.” The library, founded in 1915, is a compilation of donated books and magazines. It fos tered the development of an en tire American Merchant Marine Library system that now serves seamen in New York, Boston, San Francisco, New Orleans and Seattle. Sillers helped her mother run the library for 30 years before taking it over herself. When asked about changes, “Not many,” she says, “we just have to provide more books for the women on the ships. There are a lot more women on board today, doing everything. They used to just work in the galley.” The library was founded by Belle Case to provide some sort of entertainment for World War I sailors traveling through the locks enroute to Europe. Doctors sav she probably will die in a month if she does not get the transplant. The disease occurs once in ev ery 10,000 births and is usually fatal by die end of the first year. Doctors are looking for a one- year-old brain-dead child with tvpe O blood as a donor. Jaime’s ailment was disco vered after her parents noticed she was jaundiced at the age of six weeks. She was referred bv a local doctor to Children's Hos pital Medical in Boston where surgeons diagnosed her condi tion and performed an eight- hour operation in February.
