John Hannah of Tyler and Tony Canales of Corpus Christi announced Wednesday they will direct the Democratic Party pro ject called “Democracy Yes” on election day to make Democratic lawyers available statewide to TOO EARLY TO THINK ABOUT CHRISTMAS? NOT AT ALL- JOIN US FOR Saturday in the Park people who have trouble voting. Hannah said Democrats are concerned recent actions ol the secretary of state concerning the infamous felons list and past ac tions of Republican poll watch ers will discourage many Texans from voting. He said the list of alleged felons that Republican Secretary of State David Dean released in September for exclusion from county voting rolls has added to an “atmosphere of intimidation” fostered by the Republican Party. The Democratic Party re ceived reports in 1980 that Re publican pollwatchers were narassing voters in an attempt to slow voting down and create long lines, Hannah said. He predicted the Democrats will sweep the ballot this year if Dean’s prediction of a 42 per cent turnout is right. The only way Republican can didates can win is if Democratic voters do not cast ballots, he said. Meanwhile, Sen. Bill Meier was tabbed “one of the most anti-consumer legislators in state history" Wednesday by the Texas Consumer Association marking the first time the state wide consumers’ group has pub licly opposed a statewide candi date. “The of fice of Texas attorney general is charged with the duty of enforcing most of the major consumer protection laws of the state," said TCA director Rebec ca Lightsey. ‘‘We are concerned with corporate political action committees’ efforts to elect one the most anti-consumer legisla tors in the state’s history.” Meier, a Euless Republican, faces Rep. Jim Mattox, D-Texas, in the November general elec tion. He accused the TCA “blowing smoke” and saidfl would breathe new lifeintoilf has l>een a dying section old attorney general’s office.
