Prime rate falls to 12% United Press International NEW YORK — Morgan Guaranty Trust of New York cut its prime rate for business loans from 13 to 12 percent Tuesday, the lowest level in more than two years, in response to Feder al Reserve credit easing. UMB Bank 8c Trust Co., a subsidiary of Israel’s Mizrahi bank, lowered its prime rate to 12 percent from 13 percent just before Morgan slashed its rate. Mongan’s rate is the lowest level since Sept. 11, 1980. Unknown just 15 months ago, Alabama’s lead singer, Ran dy Owen, tearfully raised his trophy in triumph before a na tional television audience and said, “1 want to dedicate this to my father.” It was the first time a group was named Entertainer of the Year, considered country music’s most prestigious award. They also won Vocal Group and Instrumental Group of the Year. Willie Nelson’s plaintive re vival of “Always on My Mind” won Album, Single and Song of the Year, an award that goes to the songwriters. The red-haired “renegade hippie” turned jet- setter refused to perform on the show in a spat over how many of his group members could appear with him. Newcomer Ricky Skaggs was the surprise multiple-award winner. The bluegrass-flavored artist won Male Vocalist of the Year and the Horizon Award, presented to country’s emerging stars. Alabama, Nelson and Skaggs each were nominated in five of the 11 award categories, more ‘7 thunk my mom unci duddy for making me sing, making me practice when I couldn’t go out and play baseball or go fishing, ” Ricky Skaggs, Male Vocalist of the Year than any other entertainers. Janie Fricke was named Female Vocalist of the Year, Chet Atkins claimed top in strumentalist for an unpre cedented fifth time in 16 years and David Frizzell and Shelly West were dubbed Vocal Duo of the Year. Alabama is made up of three cousins from Fort Payne, Ala. — Owen, Jeff Cook and Teddy Gentry — plus drummer Mark Herndon. “We’re all brothers tonight,” Herndon said. With its hometown in mind, the group plans next week to be gin what it calls its “repayment" program to the people of Fort Payne and DeKalb County who have supported the band during its decade-long climb to the top. The first grants from $215,000 raised in the Alabama June Jam will he presented to nursing homes, lire depart ments, rescue squads and assorted youth-oriented causes in Fort Payne. Skaggs, 28, known for his mountain-tinged bluegrass, thanked his parents for making him stick to his music. “I thank my mom and daddy for making me sing, making me practice when I couldn’t go out and play baseball or go fishing,” Skaggs told the audience at the Grand Ole Opry House. Marty Robbins was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame along with Roy Horton and the late Lefty Frizzell. “It might not happen again so I’m going to take it tonight,” Robbins quipped.
