In some areas, up to 90 per cent of female koalas are affected by cystic ovary disease, leaving many sterile, according to Dr. Frank Carrick, a resear cher at the University of Queenslands Department of Veterinary Anatomy. “We just don't know how se rious this is yet," Carrick said. “It could be it's a natural popula tion control mechanism of koalas. If it is, though, it's a pret ty radical one." Carrick said the teddy bear like marsupials are not in danger of extinction because some populations remain relatively untouched by the disease. “Only about 10 percent of females are affected in some areas," he said. “However, the high inci dence in other populations means it could lead to local ex tinction and severe population crashes. It is the stuff of which extinction is made." Preliminary findings indicate the disease is most widespread where overcrowding has occur red, Carrick said. “There seems to be a relation ship between population densi ty and incidence of the disease," he said. “We've found the prob lem is more widespread on is- bearing lands and where the animals have been isolated by extensive land-clearing in surrounding areas." Carrick said in some areas of overpopulation, koalas were completely stripping eucalyptus trees of leaves and would even tually face starvation if the trend continued. “It's quite a problem trying to determine the cause of the cystic ovary disease because we don't even know what the koala's nor mal pattern of reproduction is," Carrick said. “So far we've de termined females have a 36-day gestation period and an estrus cycle of 28 days. The koala is also one of the few marsupials to have a placenta like a human." Antigues to be sold at Brazos Center show Brass mirrors, old- fashioned dolls, polished oak bureaus and colorful glass col lectables will be on sale today through Sunday at the Brazos Center. Donna McDaniel, sales representative for Lloyd R. Ward & Associates said, “We promote an antique show in the Brazos Center about four times a year. We've been doing it for around three years." The show's hours are Fri day and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. “The dealers sell strictly high class antiques," McDa niel said. “Prices will range from 10 cents to $50,000." Around 60 state and out-of state antique dealers will beat the Brazos Center this weekend for the three-day show. “We have dealers coming from Chicago, Wisconsin, al over," McDaniel said. "This event is pretty popular for both dealers and buyers." Admission to the antique show and sale is $2.50 for adults and free for children under 12 accompianied by an adult. This admission price in cludes all three show days.
