They look quite realis tic — for miniatures. Venticique, 37, now is a tech nical engineer with Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, is one of three people in an office that turns out hundreds of scale replicas of crime scenes that illustrate cases for trial juries. “We make them as simple as possible," she explains, refer ring to the miniatures usually constructed of cardboard or bal sa wood. She points to the model of the spot where a cop was shot and killed with his own gun: “We use black and white and earthy colors. We don't want to con fuse the jury." The model of the cop shooting scene, a three-quarter-inch scale version of part of Columbus Cir cle in Manhattan, is done in tan and gray. "You see the defendant came out this way," Venticique says, tracing the steps of the gunman. "On that traffic island, there was someone on the bench there," she says, describing where a witness to the slaying sat. In another case, Venticique was asked to build a model of a closet with a false wall and sec ret compartment. “The defendant hid in there for months," she said showing off the model closet that looks just right for the wardrobe of Barbie and Ken, but the killer is no doll. He was convicted in a double-homicide. Venticique has been assigned to several interesting cases. They include the John Lennon shooting at the Dakota building and the Jack Abbott case, in which the jailhouse author was convicted of killing Richard Adan at a Binibon cafe. Venticique opens a closet full of drawings and sketches and displays a huge floor plan of the Binibon, pinpointing where people sat on the day of the killing. What about the Lennon case? Ms. Venticique takes from the top of a closet the miniature she is assembling of the famed Dakota Apartments, where Len non was shot and killed Dec. 8, 1980. “I never finished it because the case never went to trial," she says. “I would like to finish it." After all, she went through much trouble trying to get the plans for the building. “Nobody seemed to have the plans. I don't think the plans ex ist anymore. I finally got some plans from a company that was doing renovation work on the building," she says. She also did some of her own surveying as she does in all the cases that are handed to her. “Maybe I'll finish it in my spare time," said Ventidque, who added that once the model is completed she will take it home. Life hasn't always been mur ders and miniatures for Venti cique. She was once a nun, but left the convent in 1970. Later, she was a school teacher in the Bronx but was laid off becauseof budget cuts. “I had a friend who went to New York City Technical Col lege, and I helped her do her drawings," she said. She then spent two years at the Brooklyn school herself be cause she liked the work. Then, the opening at Morgenthau's office came up. friday sports AFTERNOON 1:00 <S SOCCER MADE IN GERMA NY 2:00 O QD BASEBALL American League playoff game 3 EVENING 7:00 CD BASEBALL National League playoff game 3 12:00 © NFL WEEK IN REVIEW 12:30 © NFL WEEKLY MAGAZINE 1:00 © WRESTLING friday specials AFTERNOON 5:30 0 OVER EASY Mary Martin discusses her experiences follow ing a recent car accident, and her subsequent road to recovery. ^ EVENING 8:00© THE WILLMAR 8 A docu mentary profile of the eight women employees of a Minnesota bank who filed charges of employment discrimination based on sex and went on strike is presented. 10:30© OVER EASY Mary Martin discusses her experiences follow ing a recent car accident, and her subsequent road to recovery. 7:30 CBN -kVi “Swamp Fire” (1946) Buster Crabbe, Johnny Weissmuller.
