Aggies challenge cycle record
I
by Jaime Bramer
Battalion Reporter
Two Texas A&M students
will be trying to set a national
speed record for human-
powered vehicles in Califor
nia Saturday with a tricycle
they built for the national
competition.
The tricycle was built by
Bryan Sullivan and Brian
Rosenberger, both senior
aerospace engineering stu- i
dents. It will be ridden at the
competition by Hans Schnied-
er, manager of Cycles Etc. in
College Station and a student
at Sam Houston University in
Huntsville.
Sullivan discovered the
idea for the tricycle more than
a year ago in a bicycling maga
zine and he and Rosenberger
built the prototype.
“Our goal was. to design a
vehicle faster than a bicycle
and easier to pedal,” Rosen
berger said.
Rosenberger, Sullivan and
Schneider tested the tricycle

adjustments were necessary
before the national competi
tion. Problems with the
brakes, chains, and rear
wheels required attention be
fore trying for the record.
During the first test runs,
Schneider reached speeds of
close to 30 mph. But he will
have to go much faster to set a
new record. The current re
cord is 58.99 mph. Schneider,
who has raced bicycles in Bel
gium for several years, will
ride the tricycle in a 200 meter
speed run. The tricycle sits ab
out one inch off the ground
and is only 30 inches tall.
It is 146 inches long, weighs
50 pounds and is covered wklt
a streamlined styrofoam
faring.

Jim Collins blasted Lloyd
Bentsen’s voting record Monday
night in a MSC Political Forum
presentation at Rudder Thea
ter. Collins called Bentsen the
“most liberal senator in the
South,” and charged that Bent

Congress and had “outspent
both Ted Kennedy and George
McGovern.”
Speaking before a sparse
crowd, Collins said that Bentsen
had done more harm than good
in his twelve years in the Senate.
Bentsen’s vote for the windfall
profits tax cost oil and gas com
panies $50 billion and much of
that came out of Texan’s pock

Collins also accused Bentsen
of being instrumental in shaping
government policies during the
Carter presidency that led to a
jump in interest rates from 6.5
to 21.5 percent. During that
time, Bentsen was the chairman
of the Congressional Joint Eco
nomic Committee.
Collins, who is a graduate of
Southern Methodist University,
Northwestern, and Harvard has
represented the third Congres
sional District since 1966.
