MSC 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM MSC STUDENT FINANCE CENTER MONDAY — FRIDAY Begin Sept. 1, 1982 — LAST DAY, Sept. 30, 1982 FOR LEASE Muffy must work, ■* prep author says Accompanist for Century Singers. Please call 845-5974. 17t5 United Press International NEW YORK — Muffy is a lawyer and Scott is tagging along to the city with dad to look for a job at an “important” ad agency. Edith is finishing her last ‘Tm-a-bundle-of-ganglia” year at business school and Charles has — not to be believed! — sold his 1956 MG and taken an apart ment in the city so he can be closer to his office. Times are just plain awful in preppyland and many are dis covering — high cheekbones and trust funds notwithstanding — they must go out and work for a living. “One of the great maxims of preppy hood is ‘You don’t touch your capital..’ But most of the old money is now so old, it’s all split up — or it’s gone,” said Carol McDonald Wallace, a coauthor of “The Official Preppy Hand book.” Even the wealthiest of pre ppies now strive for the big financial score. “Here are people who now have material worries. They’re ah motivated by the fear there’s not enough to go around,” she said. And instead of sipping Per rier, preppies find themselves chugging diet colas and working late in the mean streets of fi nance or business. “I know so many lawyers who wish they weren’t lawyers,” she said. Wallace, 27, is also the author of a new book, “Welcome to Mount Merry College,” whidil spoofs a typical, “absolutely no-1 where” college. A bona fide preppy who was j brought up in the broad-lawn; leisure of Southport, Conn,[ Wallace is a product of the < elusive Green Farms Academy I and Princeton University. “I graduated from Green I Farms in a class of 30. We were j extremely innocent. Thebiggestl thing was when two girls were] suspended for smoking cigarettes. No one was dealing;! dope or blowing up a gym orf anything,” she said. Wallace speaks in a clipped, rapid manner and mixespreppj idioms with the jargon of the almost-scholar. “Preppyhood also implies a staggering complacency and a sense of conservatism too but it is conservatism in the sense of stewardship, i.e., you have to think about the next generation, But, oh well, sic transit,” said. The main thing, however,is huarl to do things and revere things hie that, “as John Gardner says, ‘keep the trolls away.’” “But you no longer can sit | back and say, well, my bone structure will carry things off, Not entirely anymore. The irony is young preppies live an old existence and John Cheever- land is filled wdth people who believe in the powerfully nostal gic and the concept of gracious living and how to preserve it,’ she said. Debate over gays renewed bv church United Press International SAN FRANCISCO — A proposal by a group of priests, nuns and lay leaders to open Ro man Catholic Church doors to practicing homosexuals has ignited renewed debate of the church’s longstanding dis approval of homosexual be havior. The group calls for the open acceptence of homosexuals as members of the church and as teachers as well as expansion of education and promotion of Catholic acceptance of homose xuality in every aspect of church life. Archbishop John R. Quinn has remained silent on the 52 specific proposals in the report but a spokesman for Quinn said the archbishop considers the re port of serious importance. The authors of “Homosex uality and Social Justice,” a re port by a church task force on gay and lesbian issues, was ori ginally intended to develop a city-wide educational program to combat increasing violent attacks against gays. But the group quickly ex panded the focus of the repon to include “psychological, emo tional and spiritual violence against homosexuals within the church in a challenge of current church attitudes toward homosexual behavior. Quinn came under fire in the report for banning the Ga) Men’s Chorus from Gathoi churches and what was calledan “unsupported and inflamma tory” statement in a 1980 letter on homosexuality. Quinn’s pastoral letter saidin part, “A normalization homosexuality could only easily foster and make moif public homosexual behavior with the result of eroding th( meaning of the family.” However, several committee members suggested incre; discussion of homosexual issue! and said pressure to open the church is already coming froi across the country. “It is not enough to say V: heard you’ w'hen this (the re port) is just a drop in the bucl ; et,” O’Connor said. “We they act on some of thesf things.” Now you know ,FREE “ APARTMENT LOCATOR SERVICE • Apartments • Duplexes • Houses • Fourplexes • Townhouses Now leasing for summer and fall. Recent surveys have reveal^ that people under 60 years wilt a clear diagonal crease in one® both ear lobes may be more Be ly than most to suffer froflf coronary artery disease, an ill ness in which arteries serving the heart become clogged wilt cholesterol and other fats. Andre Pasternac and Magdi Sami, two Canadian cardiolog ists who investigated the pros pective link, believe that the eat crease could identify peopk who are aging prematurely anil thus are at higher risk of coron ary artery disease than the gen eral population. The earlobe, they explain, contains a large number of elas tic fibers that with age grow less resilient, leading to creases. In the same fashion, increased sus ceptibility to heart disease has been shown to parallel increas ing age. C1ASSIF1 ADS « 8 t PERSONALS “Problem Pregnancy? Free pregnancy test ing and referrals.
