Two animal trainers have been charged in the death, authorities say. Thomas Haffner, 27, and Ben Williams, 29, both of Rus- kin, Fla., were charged Tuesday with first degree murder in the death of Mary Herman, 30. They had been arrested in Little Rock, Ark., where they were working with a circus. Dennis Conway, Wood County circuit judge, set bail for each man at $75,000. Both were being held in the Wood County jail until an unspecified court date. The charges carry max imum sentences of life in prison. Authorities last week said the | woman’s death may have been linked to an elephant traveling I with a circus show, but refused l to elaborate. Wood County Coroner James j Breitenstein said pathologist Robert Huntington had told him the woman was killed by a crushing-type injury that looked like a car ran over her but left no tire marks. Her skull was crushed. Huntington said it was possi ble an elephant could have in jured the woman and Breiten stein said he would not rule out that an elephant caused the death. An elephant named Anna Mae was seen in a parked animal trailer about 20 feet from where the body was found, Wood County District Attorney Keith Ellison said. Herman’s body was discolj vered Sept. 13 in a bushy ara near the Wilbern’s restaun Officials said she died of massiij hemorrhaging due to a blow| the head.
