Battalion/Page 16 September 17,1982 sports Texas’ Akers anxious about 1982 season opener United Press International There have been 22 touch downs scored thus far by South west Conference teams, 688 plays have been run and almost 3,000 yards have been gained. And now the Texas Lon ghorns get to play. llv, Akers said, “we get a chance to play a game. It seems like every one else is about halfway through their season. I think we are about the last major college team in the nation to get started.” The Longhorns begin their season Saturday night at home against the Utah Utes, who have already played twice. It is one of eight games on the busiest Southwest Conference schedule to date. Only Baylor, still bemoaning its loss to the Ohio State Buck eyes, will have the weekend off. The arrival of Texas on the playing field has been awaited with some anticipation since the Longhorns are a team of ques tion marks. They could be very good, but nobody is sure. Texas lost 21 seniors off the .1981 team that upset Alabama in the Cotton Bowl and 17 of those either drafted or signed as free agents by NFL teams. The rest of the SWC action will feature what could be the most one-sided game in the country this week as well as a key encounter in the life of Texas Christian University. Sixth-ranked SMU, coming off an impressive season open ing walloping of Tulane, travels to El Paso for what should be a routine blitz of the Texas-El Paso Miners. The Miners fell to Washing ton last week, 55-0, and since the Mustangs and Huskies are both in the scramble for the national championship this week’s score from the Sun Bowl should be interesting. TCU, meanwhile, travels to Kansas in an attempt to bring off the most significant road victory for the Horned Frogs during the six-year tenure of coach F. A. Dry. The Frogs won their opening game last week for the first time since 1974 and the Jayhawks were an upset victim of the Wichita Wheatshockers. “Kansas is a bowl team,” Dry said. “I’m sure they were a little over confident in the Wichita game. Plus, they probably made a lot of firstgame mistakes. You can bet they will be ready this week.” Tenth-ranked Arkansas, meanwhile, will be in Little Rod to take on the Navy and Texa Tech will be at home againsttli Air Force — the first timetli SWC has had two service acadi mies on the schedule the san day. Houston will be trying tort bound from its loss to Miat when it takes on Arizona State the Astrodome while Rice, stti ned by Southwestern Louisian a week ago, visits Tulane. Finally, Texas A&M retuu to action following a needs week off. Coach Jackie Sb has made wholesale changes the defense that was riddled Boston College and now tl- Aggies face another lightly garded team — Texa Arlington. In a taped telephone state ment for the media Thursday, Garvey said from Washington that his executive committee was meeting to evaluate the bargain ing talks that will resume today at 2 p.m. EDT at a midtown hotel. “We have not made a final decision yet,” said Garvey. “The players could strike as of Tues day of next week or postpone it for a week. I think it’s premature to make that determination. “We’ll go to the bargaining table with an open mind. We’re going to make some moves and we expect them to make some moves.” Then, taking an obvious swipe at the NFL commissioner, Garvey wisecracked: “I would hope now that Pete Rozelle would get off the antitrust bill he is trying to sneak through Con- well will gress and get to the bargainii Ruthrie table and see if we can resok 1 Stron this matter.” loved Sacker, Cleveland owner Art Modi lettles predicted Thursday thatapb leback ers’ strike, if it occurs, wouldl 11 oect short, but indicated the seasfl posit could be scrubbed if it wei Fresh more than two weeks. oming | the A : Ben in Silly Ca eps fre er at sti “I fee imp he “I can’t believe it would be| lengthy absence, because of tl physical condition it takes play the game,” he said. 1 cannot play a split season baseball.
