sports Battalion/Page 1 September 3, Sherrill’s offensive linemen benefit from weightlifting United Press International It is a certainty that no matter how good or bad the Texas Aggies are in the first year of Coach Jackie Sherrill, their offensive line will be no pushover. Right tackle Tommy Robison of Portland is proof that Sher rill’s heightened off-season training program will present a weightier problem for the Bos ton College Eagles Saturday and for other opponents. I’ve been taught to use my upper body and it’s easier to get the job done now.” Sherrill said as a result of the weight training his five starters have gained an average of 20 pounds. Left tackle Bryan Dausin of San Antonio, for one, is up 20 pounds to 255. their legs and two of those on the upper body. “It was a cycle of lifting that made a lot of sense. The cycle had a specified number of re petitions at each weight. It was a good workout — more than we were accustomed to. It wasn’t anything that would kill you,” he said. Sherrill left the University of Pittsburgh in January to take the Aggie job, and imone of his first talks with the Aggies he stunned Robison. The average height and weight of the offensive line is 6-4 and 265 pounds. That compares to a 6-3, 246-pound average on last year’s team. From left to right across the front are Dausin, Greg Porter (6-3, 250), center Matt Darwin (6-4, 260), Tim Ward (6-5, 275) and Robi son. The tight end is 6-2, 227- pound Mark Lewis. “He told us we were the weakest offensive line he had ever seen,” Robison said Tues day. “He told us we would have to build ourselves up and get stronger.” “Our front line is a good one but we cannot get any of them hurt,” Sherrill said. “We’re very thin behind the starters.” ~^NEW CLASSES starting SEPTEMBER 7 Robison weighed 270 pounds and bench pressed 280 pounds before Sherrill spoke. Now, Robison weighs 290 and can push a bar carrying 340 pounds off his chest. He’s one of many Aggies who are stronger this season, and he likes the product of his added strength. “I feel stronger and confi dent,” he said. “In pass blocking The line blocks for senior quarterback Gary Kubiak of Houston, one of the best passers in Aggie history, and senior run ning backs Johnny Hector of New Iberia, La., and Earnest Jackson of Rosenberg.
