Armed with letters of intro duction from boarding schools, British ambassadors and Indian embassies from Cairo to Mos cow, Mandal has been on an eight-year goodwill mission and voyage of self-discovery. “Same bicycle, 56 changes of tires,” the diminutive cyclist said with a ready grin. Mandal, a Bengali from Cal cutta, left his graduate studies in botany eight years ago to see the world on a bicycle. “To tell you the truth, I am getting rather tired of cycling,” he said. “But I am addicted to travel and I have 42 or 44 coun tries I want to see yet.” To date, Mandal counts about 96 countries he has pedaled through. Most recently he pumped through several south ern states in the U.S. and arrived in Washington just in time for Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s Mandal pays his way giving lectures about the countries he has visited and showing some of his more than 70,000 slides. Dozens of letters of commen dation stuffed in his saddle bags attest the interest educators, stu dents and diplomats show in his adventures. As a Hindu, he says he be lieves in the basic goodness of man and during his odyssey he has never been robbed. Soviet police returned him to the Indian embassy when he strayed too far outside Moscow. Czech border guards wouldn’t let him cross the frontier from Poland because he sported a Solidarity badge. He was thrown out of the Central African Empire during the coronation of Bokassa because he didn’t have a formal suit. ffliior’s not resun A&A head foe has spei upgrade liversity’s two-pan realizes h \ff have at past sevt by Frar Sp ackie She in Pitt The Dogs are Three Dog Night — Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron — will perform tonight at Graham Central Station. The object of her frustration was a worried K.C. Brown, walk ing a couple of hurried steps in front of her toward the Ottawa County courthouse. They had driven the 56 miles from Nowata, Okla., on this clear, muggy summer day for a ceremony at Laverne’s Marriage Parlor. But Laverne’s, which advertises weddings that take only 90 minutes from blood test to honeymoon, has just given them some disheartening news. K.C., who is 25 and looks it, recently had to swap his driver’s license for a traffic ticket and he can’t prove he’s older than 18. No proof, no marriage license. The ticket would do the trick, but he didn’t bring it. Pam has her license. She’s 24. The courthouse is across the street from the parlor, a one- story white frame building that once was a residence. K.C. and Pam were told to ask Court Clerk Earl Gonce to de clare K.C. marriageable before they go to Bamberfs Osteopathic Clinic on the other side of the courthouse lor their blood tests. Gonce, who must do this often, tells a deputy to give K.C. the go-ahead on looks. The 56- mile trip was worth it. K.C. and Pam go to Bamberfs. The clinic needs $12 and a little blood, and says the results will be ready in an hour. lege footbal lew Aggie 1 can honesth iljidi time Sttjnd has be (However, sir double-duty Trtorand h< Miami, a city of 14,000 nes tled in Oklahoma’s fertile north east corner, once had a host of marriage parlors.
