Shrimpers from Texas to south Florida say there is one reason behind the light catches, which have been running far be hind what was caught by this time last year. “It’s no secret. There is no shrimp,” said Walton Kraver, a partner in Deep Sea Foods, which owns shrimp boats and a processing plant in Mobile. Shrimpers who made the annual trek to south Florida during the winter months got a taste of the coming season. Kraver said the winter catch was about half what they caught last year. Following the traditional migratory pattern, the Bayou La Batre shrimp fleet moved on to waters off the coasts of Alabama and Mississippi where author ities had predicted an exception al year. Government figures show that off the coast of the two states 2.6 million pounds of shrimp were netted through June 30, 1981. For the same period this year, only 1.9 million pounds were caught. In the entire gulf, shrimp production dropped from 27.5 million pounds through June 1981 to 23.4 million in the same period this year. “The catch was down 80 per cent in Louisiana, so we were really looking to Texas for help,” Kraver said. To give the shrimp a chance to mature, waters within 200 miles of the Texas shore were closed for 45 days. “The first night we did all right,” Kraver said. “But the catch has dwindled ever since.” He said the Bayou La Batre fleet would remain in Texas un til September. Kraver said the consumer will bear the brunt of the poor crop. “The price goes up,” he said. oil} hui .le; Ml ten: Ml feig fie s “And the shrimper whoii; marginal gooa busiira goes under/’ A group of shrimp inJi representatives went Washington to lobby forfJ Kraver, who was pani group, said the trip wasaj of time: “I really thoughtwecoiii a few import tariffs pas to give Americans the a tage, (but) just to keepusett^ c He said shrimp impottiK,} }- np impoitil increased while domesticT men are forced to paj : | tariffs to sell shrimp irdl!j or other countries. “These countries don A e( j to pay a penny to sell shraM a f e the United States," hesaiiB n0 | Kraver said that despiiiB r j ct E oor year and th^impon;p ;in & •m, the seafood inausiri||. as survive. fc sn “We’re just going to r|f rar (the recession) out,” he /filing don’t forecast doom forosB| ose food industry, just a hardcB“Y c Bo it, Wklk Don’t Shuttle Condominium living is just a short walk from campus.
