sports Battalion/Page 14 July 15,1982 Recruits (continued from page 11) during his career. “I was real pleased with the way it turned out,” Lee said. “I thought I could have played a little better during my junior year, but we had a bunch of young players and I kind of had to pick up the slack. But during my senior year, it went well, be cause I didn’t have to worry. I could just go out and relax and play.” June 26, Lee competed on the South squad in the Illinois Bas ketball Coaches Association Class AA All-Star game in Peoria, Ill., scoring 19 points and receiving recognition as his team’s MVP. Among other achievements, Lee holds eight records at Washington High School, is the school’s all-time leading scorer and was named all Mid-State Conference all three years he played on the var sity. Bock, who started at center for Santa Clara High School for three years, has been living in Cain Hall during the summer, as has Gilbert. Both have had a chance to compete recreational- ly with several of the Aggie team members and have found them and Texas A&M to their liking. “The people involved (here) are what really swayed me to come here,” Bock said. “I’ve got ten to know Coach Metcalf real well, and I think I’ll fit in well. “I’ve got a goal of starting as soon as possible. I’ve got to get into the swing of college ball and work out to get myself ready. I have my work cut out for me. I feel that since as long as I’ve been playing, I’ve been at cen ter, the switch (to college basket ball) won’t be that drastic for me.” Bock averaged 17 points, 10.4 rebounds and five blocked shots a game during his senior year, and led his team to two of the last three California Interscholastic Federation titles. After shooting from 6-3 in the eighth grade to about 6-6 by the time he began playing on the Santa Clara varsity during his sophomore year, Bock has achieved a height — and overall size, at 233 pounds — that gives Metcalf reason to be excited ab out the possibility of having a real “big man” under the basket. Gilbert, who boasted senior- year averages of 17 points and 15 rebounds a game, will com pete in the Texas High School Coaches Association’s North- South All-Star game July 22 at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston. Gilbert made first team all-state and led his team to two district titles and one zone title. During each of his three years on the Hornet varsity, the team lost to the eventual state champion in bi-district play. The Huntsville all-stater also has a desire for competition, which he said will boost his effort to become a contributing factor on Metcalfs team. “I hope it’s tough for me,” Gil bert said. “The tougher it is, the better it is for me.” No progress made NFL players, owners can’t agree on contm ol. 75 Nc United Press International NEW YORK — The NFL’s Management Council and the Players Association took turns punting each other’s proposals around Wednesday — just 36 hours before the basic agree ment is due to expire. Despite a marked lack of progress on negotiations for a new contract, the league’s bar gaining arm and the union agreed to continue talks today. The present contract expires at midnight tonight. The Management Council offered a 48-page proposal fora 5-year contract late Tuesday that promptly was rebuffed and Wednesday’s talks did little to narrow the chasm between the negotiators. “We made a substantial prop osal to them they didn’t hardly read before rejecting,” said Jack Donlan, executive director of the Management Council. “We certainly hope there’s no strike because we think players can see their economic conditions will be improved. This was not a fin al proposal but it’s a basis.” Union President Gene Up shaw, a veteran guard for the Oakland-Los Angeles Raiders, was asked if players would strike in preseason, at the opening of the season or during the cam paign. “Yes,” he said coyly. “When Oakland plays the New York Jets, do they give away their game plan in advance?” The Management Council was denied in its Wednesday attempt to extend the July 15 signing waiver. As the present contract states, no offers can be made to unsigned players — both veterans and rookies — af ter July 15 without a new con tract. League management con tends the unsigned players can come to terms even after the July 15 expiration date if the offer was made prior to the deadline. The union agrees in the case of veterans, but main tains rookies cannot out a new agreement “Yesterday’^ proposal kJ first time they at least puts® thing in writing, butitwsi® unacceptable to us,” EdGt®- the players’ representative,® “fhe lawyer who drafi® unite (waiver extension proiLONDON thought he was being ci ixploded in drafting something that )* killing t- allow them to go on witli®abeth’s < collective bargaining , iuard and a nd woundi (irk, police |A spoke THE PAST 10 TEARS HATE SEEN —.
