features Battalion/Pajff July 1, New system to help battle check-bouncers Warped By Scott McCuh United Press International SAN ANTONIO — A tele phone-sized computer de veloped by Southwest Research Institute presents businesses with a new weapon in the battle against hot checks, officials at the Institute say. The LR-8 DataLink terminal can verify checks in 10 seconds and give a customer’s standing with a major credit card com pany in 18 seconds, officials said Tuesday. The terminal can be tied to computers that carry the names of 80,000 bad check writers in South Texas and the credit card data. The Institute developed the computer device for Frank Lombardino, a former Texas senator who founded a San Antonio credit and check collec tions business in 1954. “Our experience with bad checks indicates that 50 percent of all returned checks are hot checks written by repeat offen ders,” Lombardino said. “Data Link can eliminate these im mediately.” He said clerks will no longer have to leave their stations to have checks approved, and time will be saved for the business and the customer. “In most cases, it makes check cashing faster than using cash,” Lombardino said. The DataLink terminals have been tested at the Frost Bros, department stores in San Anto nio, where vice president John McCue said the terminals are “a major breakthrough in reduc ing hot check losses and impro ving customer relations.” The Kroger Co. has leased 132 of the LR-8 models for its San Antonio stores. Sixteen terminals can be tied into one telephone line to reach the computer bank.
