The Texas A&M men’s track
team, after finishing in a fifth-
place tie in the Southwest Con
ference meet two weeks ago, will
compete in Wichita, Kan., Fri
day and Saturday at the Track
Federation of America-USA
meet.
Coaches Charlie Thomas and
Ted Nelson say it’s not certain
whether sprinter Rod Richard
son, who injured a hamstring in
the SWC meet, will run in the
NCAA meet. That event is
slated for June 1-5 in Provo,
Utah.
If Richardson can’t compete
in the 400-meter relay at the
NCAA meet, teammate Mike
Glaspie may take his place on
that unit. Richardson, who won
the NCAA indoor title in the
100-meter dash, pulled up lame
during the latter part of the
SWC meet in Houston.
Texas A&M’s other NCAA
qualifiers include Don Jones
and Chuck Perry in the high
jump; Johnny Hector in the
long jump; Kevin McGinnis and
Robert Windsor in the shot;
Richardson in the 100- and 200-
meter dashes; James Washing
ton in the 200-meter dash; Glas
pie in the 110-meter hurdles;
Rick Thomas in the 400-meter
hurdles, and Washington,
Richardson, Darrell Austin and
Vernon Pittman in the 400-
meter relay.
Texas A&M’s men’s and
women’s golf teams will partici
pate in national competition
starting today. The men’s team,
which won the SWC title on the
strength of Danny Briggs’ med
alist honors, plays in the NCAA
tournament in Pinehurst, N.C.
The women’s team, led by
junior Shirley Furlong and
senior Monica Welsh, will
attempt to win the NCAA na
tional championships in a field
of 21 teams. The Aggies won the
state championship over TCU
and Texas during April.
