Emory University resear chers, writing in the recent edi tion of the New England Journal of Medicine, said one of the men died of the cancer, known as soft-tissue sarcoma. The tumors grew in the veterans’ lungs and, in the fatal case, the brain also was affected. In the cases, two patients, one a member of an Air Force heli copter rescue team and the other a Marine, were stationed in areas of Vietnam where de foliants were used in 1966 and 1967. The Air Force man under went lung surgery in 1979 for a tumor and died in 1981. The Marine, who claimed to be twice completely soaked with Agent Orange, had his left lung removed because of a tumor. The cancer spread in 1981 and the researchers said currently he is receiving chemotherapy. The third patient, an Army man who served in 1971 in an area where defoliants were used, was discovered to have a lung tumor in 1981. A spokesman for the Veter ans Administration Hospital of Atlanta, where the doctors work, said three cases is not enough to establish a link be tween the chemical and cancer. “To jump to conclusions ab out cause and effect would be irresponsible, at the very least, I would say,” Charles Grim, the hospital’s associate director, said. The doctors, P. Ravi Sarma and Julian Jacobs, were unavail able for comment. American Cancer Society officials estimate soft tissue sar comas affect two people per 100,000 a year. A total of 4,500 new cases and 1,600 deaths are expected this year. Agent Orange is believed to JEFFERY B. FROM BUFFALO! IWanna know your jokes-| Iter? It also has been shown to cause chloracne, a severe skin irritation resembling ordinary acne which is easily treated. The federal General Accounting Office reported at least 21,000 Marines and num erous Army personnel were within a third of a mile of the Vietnam countryside sprayed with Agent Orange. Edward Moen, a spokesman for the VA in Washington, said the UCLA study will involve thousands of veterans and will take four to five years. The Air Force is studying some 1,000 members of air crews who handled and sprayed Agent Orange in Vietnam. The participants will be followed for 20 years. In addition, the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta is studying 10,000 births to deter mine if exposure to chemicals such as Agent Orange is related to birth defects. Moen said the VA allows veterans who believe they have been exposed to dioxins to be tested. Their cases are filed in a central data bank for future re ference. Roylston Wednesday granted a motion by attorneys for for mer Tucson policeman Roy Garcia that he “is entitled to re lief by way of special action.” A jury awarded damages to T Garcia 18 months ago but the city of South Tucson has main- j tained it is too poor to pay. Garcia, 32, was among the officers responding to a call 3 V* years ago involving a barricaded gunman when he was acciden tally shot by another South Tuc son policeman. Garcia is para lyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. South Tucson, held negligent in the shooting, fought the jury award to the Arizona Supreme Court and lost. The city’s legal fees were in excess of $120,000. South Tucson City Manager Richard Kaffenberger said he will ask the City Council to appeal Roylston’s ruling and said the city may again try for a negotiated settlement with Garcia. “By forcing South Tucson into bankruptcy, it is important the attorneys for the plaintiff understand they’re not going to break the resolve of these peo ple (South Tucson residents),” Kaffenberger said. The city, hard hit by the reces sion and layoffs at nearby cop per mines, has threatened to be come the nation’s first city to file for financial reorganization since the U.S. Bankruptcy Act was revised five years ago. South Tucson, incorporated in 1936, is dotted with taverns and rundown housing and has had a running battle with prosti tution, drug trafficking and vio lent crime, some of it created by Cuban refugees.
