He de scribes his current post as a “catch-all,” in which he has been able to counsel student-athletes and teach on the faculty as well. A native of Laurel, Miss., Hunt received his bachelor’s de gree from Mississippi State, then earned a master’s in education and a doctorate in secondary education. He served as the athletic academic counselor and head track and field coach at MSU from 1969-79, and took the position as administrative assistant for student-athlete ser vices in 1979. Hunt said he considers the Texas A&M job to be an excel lent opportunity. “I’m certainly looking for ward to it,” he said. “Texas A&M has a fine institution academical ly and a fine athletic program. “Basically, I’ll be teaching a couple of courses in mathema tics, and the other part of my duties will consist of counseling. That will include evaluation of student-athletes when they come in as freshmen, and get ting an indication of where their abilities and preferences lie. “Then we’ll guide them through the degree program they’ve chosen,” Hunt said. “We’re going to really empha size the graduation aspect of col lege life. We’ll do everything we can to give them a quality educa tion.” Although he’s never dealt with Jackie Sherrill or any of the Texas A&M academicians, Hunt said he anticipates the challenge. “I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I think it’s an honor to be associated with Jackie Sherrill and A&M’s program. A&M’ll be a completely new experience for me. One of the intriguing things for me about taking the job was getting into a new system and working with new people.” Beals never worked with Sherrill directly, but has been in volved in academic counseling at Pittsburgh, where Sherrill coached for four seasons. said. /ed (inli elieve lyers hen feel ' id move always k much In’t belie' ichedule jonday’s not just any ay in LA’s 3-2 victory ^United Press International beenorj mere’s something about xt Janin ptreal that brings out the best a sprinf Rick Monday. I’ve handled many situations poorly in my life and confounded them by changing my mind. “I know Sherrill as a man being sincerely interested in academic performance,” he said. “I will always regret having decided against the position. It was really tough denying myself a chance to work for him.” Beals said that by no means was there a disagreement be tween Sherrill and him, and that a desire to remain at Tennessee prompted his refusal of the Texas A&M position. But he added: “I felt like I would really not do as good ajob as he would have expected. I really didn’t feel up to it as things developed. As intensely as (Sherrill) wants to reconstruct the A&M program, he would have been disappointed. “And Coach Sherrill is not the kind of man you want to dis appoint. “I felt like I might be more valuable trying to continue what I had started here,” Beals said. “I really admire Texas A&M — it’s a fine institution and a very special kind of place. “I probably am better estab lished at Tennessee than I would have been in a long time at A&M. It’s really half personal and half institutional. I finally balanced it out and decided to stay here. “I wouldn’t blame Sherrill at all for resenting me about the way I handled it... and the way I disappointed him,” he said. “I really may regret for the re mainder of my life having turned down the chance to take part in his program.” TS-O Prescriptions Filled Glasses Repaired BRYAN 216 N.
