Safety glasses worn prevent
eye injuries in the home
United Press International
NEW YORK — Most eye in
juries occur at home, and nine
out of 10 can be prevented, says
the executive director of the Na
tional Society to Prevent Blind
ness.
An estimated 45 percent of
all eye injuries are from home
accidents, Virginia S. Boyce
said. Industry requires protec
tive eyewear, but too many peo
ple do not use the same precau
tions in eye-threatening activi
ties at home, she said.
The top causes of eye injuries
at home involve home construc
tion materials and hand and
power tools, Boyce said.
Power mowers often throw
rocks, sticks and other ground
debris toward the face with great
velocity, she said.
To prevent accidents, the
society recommends wearing in
dustrial quality safety glass while
mowing the lawn or working
with tools and construction
materials. The society also re
commends chemical safety gog
gles when using household che
micals such as strong cleaners,
garden fertilizers and aerosol
products.

Although he was “scared to

and said he wanted to go back up
and jump from 4,500 feet.
“They said, ‘My God, you
came back from the dead once,
and you want to do it again,”’
Forte recalled.

The incident has not di

and “she’s about ready to kill me
herself,” he said.
“I’m lucky, but I still like sky
diving,” he said. “I love free fall.
It’s beautiful just going through
the air. Sometimes I don’t even
like to open up (the parachute).
I like to keep falling.”
