College Station United Press International NEW YORK — The higher risk of heart attack among women who smoke and take birth control pills lingers in 40 to 49-year-olds if they continue to smoke after giving up the pill, researchers say. “We estimate there are approximately 2,500 excess deaths from myocardial infarc tion in the United States each year among women in this age group (40-49) who smoke and are current or former users of oral contraceptives,” federal health investigators said in a re port Monday. There is no evidence of a re sidual risk of heart attack among women who had used the pill when they were under 30, then stopped, said the report in “Family Planning Perspectives,” the journal of the Alan Gutt- macher Institute. At its peak usage in the Un ited States, the pill was used by about 10 million women. As re ports of side effects have in creased, however, use has slumped to below 7 million. The report examined pat terns among women 40 to 49 in a large case-control study of oral contraceptives under way at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. It was based on an analysis by federal epidemiologists of a widely publicized study by the Drug Epidemiology Unit at Bos ton University — the first re search unit to report an in creased risk of heart attack among users of the pill. The risk was linked to an increase in age and duration of past pill use. A related report in the jour nal cites three new British birth- control pill studies. One shows little, if any, over all increase in the risk of cancer ous tumors from birth-control pill use. A second finds a slightly increased risk of gall bladder iMan urges theft, gets life :h United Press International MCKINNEY — A Dallas ®n, determined by a jury to have encouraged his three step- RMis to steal, has been sentenced i would pi life i n P rison - for 1982® Under the state’s habitual cri- :t cutting ^ate District Judge e Rocky Holland sentenced Adolph Reyes Salmeron, 54, to life in >rt prison for assisting and en- the hi coura g‘ n g his teenaged stepsons ^"wildlifS The Collin County jury Dnallli 1 , ursda y ■ , d ‘f ded Sa ' mer ' m nited s,a, had mi Y lded the Y^hs m di recting them to steal $340 worth d official ^ stereo cassette players and headphones from a Plano de nt cuts ff?P artrnent store.
