THE ONLY CANDIDATE IN THE RACE J sports Metcalf signs center' Gilbert of Huntsvir Texas A&M basketball coach Shelby Metcalf' says he’s never signed an athlete who’s been sought by two Final Four teams. But now he’s done just that. Jimmie Gilbert, a 6-9, 200- pound center from Huntsville, signed a letter of intent Thurs day to play at Texas A&M next year. A first team all-stater dur ing the past season, Gilbert vi sited Georgetown and Houston, both members of this year’s Fin al Four. The Hoyas finished the season losing to North Carolina in the national championship game. “We’re very pleased to have Jimmy in our program,” Metcalf said. “We feel he’ll help us im mediately. He came from a great program at Huntsville. He’s fundamentally sound and a well-disciplined player. Jimmy will play center and forward for the Agg ies.” Huntsville coach Gary Sur- ratt, a 1969 graduate of Texas A&M, said Gilbert could have a great impact on the Aggie bas ketball program. “He’s a hard worker with a very go<xf attitude,” Surratt said. “He’s willing to go the extra step it takes to win. He runs very well, has good leaping ability and is a strong rebounder. He’s a gtxxl team player and he loves to win. “His future is ahead of him. He'll be real credit to Texas A&M.” During Gilbert's four years at Huntsville, the Hornets com piled a 99-30 record, winning one state championship, three district championships and one zone championship. During his sophomore year, Gilbert made second team All-District 10- AAAA while starting only about half of his team's games. After being unanimously selected for first team all-district during his junior year, Gilbert also qualified for second team All-Greater Houston while lead ing his team to the district title. As a senior, Gilbert averaged 17 points a game and a school- record 15 rebounds a game. In addition, he ’.ot 55 percent from the field. In his best ef fort of the year, Gilbert had 19 re bounds and hit 1 l-of-14 field goals. Gilbert, contacted by about 100 other schools around the nation, had a career best of nine blocked shots in one game dur ing his senior year. He scored a personal high 30 points against Bryan during the past season. m ^ (continued i :fte|say they’ll I 'When the i Satffthiy, the ; Jown to bushtet The athletes ing fun seeing a 1 (nates and findi a nd can’t still d tween the goal 1 "We’re enjoyi lipP- a former won the 1974 Award.
