Dead actor’s skull ‘working’ in Texas Tech production United Press International LUBBOCK — Irish-born actor George Frederick Cooke, dead for 170 years, is playing one of the more infamous char acters in Texas Tech Universi ty’s production of “Hamlet” — his skull is being used to portray “poor Yorick.” Cooke, who died in 1812, is perhaps the only actor who has had a posthumous career. His skull, owned by the Thomas Jef ferson University Medical School library in Philadelphia, is loaned to theater productions. Texas Tech’s is the third to use it. “A long time ago I read about Cooke’s skull, and when I learned it was available, I fired off a letter to the library asking if we could use it in the Hamlet’ production,” Texas Tech thea ter department chairman Richard Weaver said. University officials arranged to insure the skull for $50,000 for the trip from Philadelphia to Lubbock and for the period it is used at Tech. The skull will be used in only one of the play’s performances, through April 27, because of scheduled from April 23 fears of breakage. DIETING?
