Ticketed student faces 'deadly' charges by United Press International BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Bowling Green State University student Michael Kevin Groff did his best to convince court offi cials he was dead, but he still will have to go to trial for a speeding ticket. Groff, 22, admits he faked his death so he wouldn't have to go to court. Today he faces the traf fic charge. Groff was to have appeared in Municipal Court March 10. But a man who identified himself as Groff's brother called the court and said Michael Groff was in a Mayfield Heights hospital in a coma. A few days later the court received a letter on stationary from Hillcrest Hospital saying Groff had been admitted March 6 and had "expired" March 11. Also enclosed was a letter allegedly signed by Groff's "mother" saying, "I hope this will be sufficient. Thank you for your cooperation during this difficult time." Judge James Bachman then dismissed the case and ordered the state to pay the the court costs. However, the Bowling Green Sentinel Tribune saw the dis missal and ran a death notice about Groff in the newspaper. THE BATT DOES IT DAILY Monday through Friday A student who knows Groff saw the death notice, then saw Groff on campus, called the pap er, which notified the court after contacting Groff, who admitted faking his death. Groff went to the court office and tried to pay a fine to cover the traffic charge but the pay ment was refused. He was ordered to appear — before Bachman.
