Howard, Phelan surpass

John Howard of Houston,
winner of the 1981 Iron Man
Briathlon of Hawaii, swam, ran
and hiked his way through a
windy, wet Saturday to win the
first Texas Triathlon.
1 Howard, 34, finished the 41-
kilometer (25-mile) event in one
hour and 38 minutes. The race
includes a one-kilometer swim, a
10-kilometer run and a 30-
kilometer bicycle i ide.
| Over 500 people from 11 to
61 participated in the competi
tion, sponsored by Texas A&M
University’s Extramural Sports
Club Association, the Bryan-
Coilege Station Chamber of
Commerce and Schlitz Brewery.

Triathlon Director Tom Weis
of Texas A&M’s Intramural Re

said: “Triathlons are really be
coming popular, at least partial
ly because of all of the attention
generated by the Iron Man
Triathlon in Hawaii. Many
marathoners and other distance
runners seem to find the triath
lon particularly appealing.”
Registration for the event was
closed at 500, Weis said, and
some people unable to enter this
year submitted their names ear
ly for the 1983 race.

After sitting inside on Friday
and Saturday watching the rain
fall instead of hosting the Aggie
Invitational, Coach Bob Brock’s
Aggie softball team let off a little
frustration Sunday.
The Minnesota Golden
Gophers, in town for the tourna
ment, went down in defeat twice
to the Aggies, losing the first
game of a double-header 14-0
and the second game 3-0.
With the tourney rained out,
the two teams decided to play
the games Sunday afternoon at a
still rain-soaked Travis Park in
Bryan.
Shan McDonald pitched a
three-hitter for Texas A&M in
the first game, but she was aided
by an offensive attack that
scored 14 runs on 19 hits.
Lori Stoll pitched a one-hitter
in the second game and her
teammates picked up three
runs, all in the bottom of the
fourth.
Stoll struck out nine batters
and walked one, improving her
record to 13-3. McDonald’s re
cord is 12-0.
Mary Lou Youngblood was
3-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBI in
the first game, and Karen Guer
rero was 3-for-3 and Carrie Au-
stgen was 3-for-4 with three
RBI. The Aggies scored seven
runs in the fourth on eight hits.
In the second game, Young
blood was 2-for-3, and Roshele.
Friudenberg and Linda Lancas
ter had RBI hits. Iva Jackson
scored on a passed ball for the
Aggies’ other run.
Brock said that although the
team was disappointed about
the cancellation of the tourna-

9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday thru Saturday
ment, the players made up for it
against the Gophers.
“Minnesota has a good team,
bvit they just caught us at the
wrong time,” Brock said. “We’d
been cooped up because of the
rain, and we were ready to play.
Everything we hit dropped in.
They just caught us at the wrong
time.”
Brock said he was pleased
with the way his team hit the ball,
and he said the fact that the play
ers hadn’t played in a while
might have had something to do
with their success.
South Carolina, which was
entered in the Aggie Invitation

day. Minnesota was able to stay
and play both Sam Houston
