In Tuesday’s opener, the Chief scored a run in the first inning to take a quick lead, but Texas A&M catcher Joe Szekely hit a three-run home run to put the Aggies in front in the bottom of the first. The homer, w hich brought Szekely’s RBI total to 45 for the season, was his 11th of the year. However, OCU scored three more runs in the second inning to take a 4-3 lead, which the Chiefs built to 6-3 in the fourth inning. Texas A&M scored its final two runs in the bottom of the fourth for the final one-run margin. Although Aggie starter David Flores pitched a complete game and didn’t issue a walk, his re cord dropped to 6-3 for the year. OCU pitcher David Evers pitched the entire game as well, raising his record to 5-2. In the second game, Scott West, 4-5, held the Aggies to only two hits. Clint Heard’s bunt single in the fourth and Grant Priess’ single in the fifth were Texas A&M’s only hits. Steve Davis, who also pitched a complete game, gave the Chiefs six hits while watching his record fall to 1-3. He is virtually assured of being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible five years after retire ment, because of his brilliant catching and power hitting. It suits my needs.” Still, Bench hinted his future salary will approach $1 million per year. Asked if he will be the highest paid Reds’ player, Bench said, “I’m among the top two,” The highest-paid Red is be lieved to be shortstop Dave Con cepcion, who recently signed a long-term contract that re portedly pays him $960,000 per year. But Bench said his new con tract is not “guaranteed.” “I didn’t ask for a guaranteed contract,” he said. “II I can’t pro duce and earn my money, then I don’t deserve it.” Bench also said he didn’t want to become a free agent, even though other clubs probably would pay him more than the Reds. Asked if he expected this to he the last contract he signs, which would mean retirement at the end of 1985, Bench said, “I hope not. “Pete Rose is still playing and he’s what — 56 years old,” Bench said with a laugh. Rose, who will be 41 this month, wants to keep playing at least another three seasons so he can break Ty Cobb’s career hit record. “I would like to get Cobb’s re cord,” chuckled Bench, “or Rose’s record, if he gets it.” When Bench does retire, he said he’d like to work part-time for the Reds, helping develop young players at spring training and in the minor leagues. “We’ve talked with Johnny about doing some work for the Reds when he quits playing,” said Reds’ President Dick Wagner. However, Bench said he didn’t want to be a majorleague manager or coach. staff photo by Peter Rocha r circulation tie empto n to buy it i* reaching anions witk eroflastre arts, d annual ss 1 wold ben® the risk ol vs. id the |-dmejobs ge freeze, if existing d to guat'2 c: iat amotiiitt ge from tl> f the conceit is, as you [ times- i said.
