Usiak United Press International BUFFALO, N.Y. — The youngster moved toward the line of scrimmage, prepared to rush the opposing quarterback. As the opposing center hand led the football, the youngster shouted, "Get the guy with the ball." At the same time, he was positioning his wheelchair. Wheelchair? The scene was a wheelchair football game featuring the Sil ver Wheels football club. The club is made up of 27 handicap ped persons aged 9 to 32. This time, the game was against a makeshift team of members of the Buffalo news media at halftime of a college basketball game in Memorial Auditorium. I was the center who lined up opposite the youngster. The club was founded in 1970 by Pat Rowe, a 29-year-old, al- ways-on-the-go account clerk at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center who doubles as the group's program coordinator. He does all this despite being confined to a wheelchair with cerebral palsy. "There weren't a lot of recrea tional activities in the area for people who, despite being con fined to a wheelchair, could function," Rowe says. Thursday Movies MORNING 11:30 CBN ★★ ‘‘Kimberly Jim” Rules were established that set some limitations but do not limit the intensity of the game. For the most part, regular touch football rules apply. The game is played on a basketball court. Those who play against the Silver Wheels must also use wheelchairs, which are pro vided by the club. Each team has a designated quarterback who is permitted to stand and throw passes, but cannot run with the ball. Blocking, especially on kick offs, is furious. "These kids spend all of their lives in a wheelchair," Rowe said, "but now you are down to their level." (1965) Jim Reeves, Madeleine Usher. A pair of gamblers win a worthless diamond mine in a poker game. Rowe stresses that the Silver Wheels "are not just one of a number of wheelchair basket ball teams." They have a special kind of spirit, he believes, and have become popular through out the nation. High schools are a popular stage for the group. "We usually go to a high school, have a group sponsor us and play the game," he said. "It's a big attraction and after wards we split the profits with the sponsor, and we give our share to a charity in the area." Rowe estimates his group has raised in excess of $9,000. This time, the Silver Wheels won, 7-0. "Sure it's important to us," Rowe says. "We don't scrim mage among ourselves. We play against people who are not dis abled. "Sometimes," he added, "that point gets lost." Command Performance For the look you’re looking for. AFTERNOON 3:00© ★★ 1 / 2 “Red Line 7000” (1965) James Caan, Laura Devon.
