Annabel's ashes
United Press International
KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
Among the thousands of items
neatly tagged and gathering
dust in the police property room
is a small metal box containing
all that remains of Annabel
Ickes.
The box, filled with Ickes’
ashes and adorned with a label
from a California funeral home,
has been under the care of prop
erty officers since 1959.
The box was turned over to
police after it was left in the safe
of a hotel by a daughter.
“I guess when the daughter
checked out, she forgot to take
her with her,” said Sgt. Ron
Ehrhardt, unit supervisor.
“She’s just like one of the
family now,” Ehrhardt said.
T he label on the box says Ick
es was cremated in 1947 in Cali
fornia. Officers have been un
able to find any relatives and no
one is quite sure what to do with
the box.
Drug dog
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Jessie
the drug-sniffing police clog is
happy again — after a brief trip
on the wrong side of the law.
The 2'/a-year-old Labrador
retriever was stolen by two men
who wanted to use his special
talent to find drugs, but was re
scued before his captors were
able to turn him into an illegal
drug snif fer.
Arrested were Dane Craig
Garrison, 27, of Hollywood,
charged with grand theft, pos
session of stolen property and
resisting arrest without violence,
and Robert Chilcote, 35, of Palm
Beach Gardens, charged with
possession of stolen property
and resisting arrest without vio
lence.
Jessie was stolen from a Hol
lywood kennel owned by Garri
son’s mother, Carol Garrison,
last week, police said Tuesday.
Garrison told the Hollywood
Sun-Tattler she thinks her son
took the dog because he had “a
crazy notion of Finding some
drugs” in a Fort Lauderdale
warehouse.
“Who in their right mind
would steal a police dog?” she
asked.
Jessie had a joyous reunion
with his partner. Detective Don
Maines.
Big bunnies
PORTLAND, Ore. — Youngs
ters who roam the White House
lawn in the Easter hunt will get
some autographed eggs featur
ing the names of some very large
bunnies.
The White House wrote the
Portland Trail Blazers asking if
the players would be willing to
autograph some eggs which
would be stashed for the annual
event. T he eggs — actually oval
wooden ones — were sent to the
club by mail and the Blazer play
ers took time from one practice
period to sign them.
Bendix book
DETROIT — Mary E. Cun
ningham is w riting a book about
being the target of rumors that a
romantic relationship w ith Ben
dix Corp. Chairman William
Agee was responsible for her
rapid rise in the company's
ranks, a new spaper says.
In a copyright story Tuesday,
the Detroit News said Cunning
ham is putting the book together
in her spare time from “copious
notes and a diary.”
Cunningham resigned from
Bendix Oct. 9. 1980. because of
rumors she became a vice presi
dent because of a romantic re
lationship with Agee.
“It’s ... about “principles we
can learn from the experience”
and about “irresponsible jour
nalism." Cunningham told the
News in a telephone interview.
"The media, in this event, w as
very much manipulated by a few
individuals (at Bendix)." she
said. Those people no longer are
with the company, she said.
Agee, as recentlv as last week
denied there was anv romantic
involvement with Cunningham
w hile she was at Bendix. He told
the News “sexism" was responsi
ble for what happened.
