The box, filled with Ickes’ ashes and adorned with a label from a California funeral home, has been under the care of prop erty officers since 1959. The box was turned over to police after it was left in the safe of a hotel by a daughter. “I guess when the daughter checked out, she forgot to take her with her,” said Sgt. Ron Ehrhardt, unit supervisor. “She’s just like one of the family now,” Ehrhardt said. T he label on the box says Ick es was cremated in 1947 in Cali fornia. Officers have been un able to find any relatives and no one is quite sure what to do with the box.
