state Battalion/Page 6 March 10, 1982 h FA A to tell how bomb got through United Press International DALLAS — A Texas con gressman expects to know this week how a bomb in a suitcase went undetected through two airports March 2 and aboard a flight favored by the Texas con gressional delegation. Rep. Martin Frost, D-Texas, said Monday the Federal Avia tion Administration promised to respond to his questions about the incident by Friday. “There was definitely a bomb aboard,” Bob Mansker, a spokesman for Frost, said Mon day. “And the fact that it didn’t go off probably was because of some malfunction. If it had, there would have been many people killed. I would say it was extremely close.” Frost began his inquiry fol lowing the discovery that a homemade bomb in luggage checked though by a passenger on Braniff Flight 1 1 1 went un detected by security at Washing ton’s National Airport and the Dallas-Fort Worth Regional Air port. It is the same flight that the Texas congressional delegation often takes home from Washington. The FBI said Airman 1st Class Martin Thomas Bradley, 27, assigned to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, placed the plastic explosives in a suit case belonging to his wife, Staf f Sgt. Mary Jo Bradley. The device was discovered when Mrs. Bradley unpacked her bag at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Bradley is being held in lieu of $400,000 bond on a charge of attempted destruction of an air craft and transportation of ex plosives in interstate commerce. He faces an extradition hearing Friday. Frost said he wanted to know Refugee deaths are mystery United Press International PORI ARTHUR — Officials from the national Center for Disease Control are investigat ing the deaths of two Viet namese refugees who lived in Port Arthur to see if they are similar to the mysterious deaths of 47 other Southeast Asian re fugees throughout the country. Justice of the Peace John Knowles said Monday that CDC investigator Dr. Roy Baron con tacted him for autopsy informa tion concerning the deaths of Tran Thanh Ha, 42, a construc tion worker who died in his sleep in 197b, and Van Pham My, 23, who died 10 minutes after reaching a local hospital after passing out in a movie theater in 1980. An autopsy report said that Tran’s death seemed to be caused by blockage of a coron ary artery. The cause of Van’s death is unknown. CDC spokesman Bob Alden said investigators are baffled by the 47 deaths, most of whom were young men and women from Southeast Asia who appeared to be in good health and then mysteriously died dur ing the night or early morning — usually in their sleep. Most of the victims of the strange deaths were Laotians, and more than half of them members of the Hmong tribe. Others were from Vietnam and Cambodia. All had been in the United States for less than five years. Alden said the only other Southeast Asian death in Texas was a man in Fort Worth. Alden sajd investigators have no clues as to what caused the deaths or even if they are re lated. He said the CDC is investi gating the deaths because they seem similar. Ken’s Automotive 421 S. Private satellites may launch from Hawaiian sites in future H0 United Press International HOUSTON — A firm attempting to build the world’s First private satellite launching system, may choose Hawaii as the launch site, a company spokesman says. Walter Pennino said Space Services Inc. of America has sent representatives to Hawaii to look at sites. SSI regards Hawaii as ideal for launches into polar low Earth orbit, he said. “Representatives already have looked at the general area around South Point, Hawaii, and recently applied formally for permission to conduct preliminary feasibil ity analyses of various prop erties in the area,” Pennino said Monday. “SSI is also seeking a short term entry permit from the Hawaii Homelands Commis sion, which controls some of the area.” Pennino said launches from Hawaii must await state o, tec ni ent and f ederal approval as well) construction and testing of launch stand.
