sports Battalion/Page 14 March 10, 1982 Two no-hitters silence OU by Gaye Denley Battalion Staff Coach Bob Brock says there are not many people who would trade places with Gay McNutt, the freshman catcher who has been playing “like a seasoned veteran” for the Texas A&M women’s softball team. “She has to have her hands specially wrapped before the games,” he said. A look at the Aggie pitching staff s record for the spring sea son tells why. Pitchers Lori Stoll and Lisa Martinez combined for their second pair of no-hitters in the team’s four outings this sea son as they shut down the Uni versity of Oklahoma 3-0, 1-0 Tuesday in Travis Park. (with coupon) Name Phone Delivery Limited To Service Area Offer Expires Sat., March 20 After four games, the Aggies are 4-0, with two perfect games and two no-hitters. Of the 87 batters Stoll and Martinez have faced this season, only three have reached base — two on walks and one on an error. “That’s phenominal because Baylor and Oklahoma Universi ty aren’t just little pushovers,” Brock said. “They can hit the ball.” It was the Aggies, however, who had a monopoly on offense Tuesday. In the first game, they finished with six hits and scored in three different innings. Stoll, meanwhile, collected 12 strike outs as she pitched her first per fect game and second no-hitter of the season. With one out in the second inning, outfielder Mary Lou Youngblood hit a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from McNutt. An error by the Oklahoma catcher put Youngblood on third, and a wild pitch allowed her to score, giving the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Outfielder Iva Jackson was the next Aggie to reach base, drawing a walk in the fifth in ning. Shannon Murray, the first baseman, followed with a single to advance Jackson to third. Jackson stole home for the Aggies’ second run. The Aggies finally recorded an RBI in the sixth inning, when a single from Youngblood scored designated hitter Josie Carter from third base. Carter had started off the inning with a single and reached second on Patti Holthous’ sacrifice bunt. Brock credited the Aggie de fense with saving a closer second game and preserving Martinez’ second no-hitter of the spring. “They got the bat on Lisa more than usual, but our de fense was excellent,” he said. Brock was especially pleased with Karen Guerrero, who threw out several near-hits from right field. “That’s something we work on,” he said. “She plays it like a shortstop. And it really takes away a team’s momentum when they get what should be a hit, and you throw them out at first.” Texas A&M’s lone run in the second game was in the fourth inning, when Guerrero singled, advanced to second on a bunt from Martinez, and scored on another single from Carter. sgii * , m O x-' SPPH Jigfii Jfe I Mi' s*** * 4* i v* staff photo by David Fishti I Texas A&M shortstop Carrie Austgen homa Tuesday at Travis Park. Sechelski Battalion Staff A second consecutive day of match play proved to be too much for the women’s tennis team as Texas A&M lost six of nine matches to Southern Methodist University Tuesday. “We just played tired,” coach Jan Cannon said. “We couldn’t get it together in singles.
