Recommended by the Gov ernor’s Commission on the Arts, the “percent for art” concept would allow Texas A&M to set aside up to 1 percent of the gross construction budgets of all new buildings costing in excess of $250,000 for the purchase and display of works of art in and around those buildings. Already passed by the Texas A&M Commission of the Visual Arts, the program still awaits approval by the University pres ident, the chancellor and the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. The commission’s members were appointed by the president on Stark’s recommendation. “I wanted influential, respected people ... with loyalty and a built-in interest in A&M,” Stark said.
