Texas A&M University 181 tin United Press International NEW YORK — A few years ago, novelist Rona Jaffe read ab out a 16-year-okl computer genius who vanished from the Michigan State University cam pus where he had been a fanatic player of the fantasy game “Dungeons and Dragons.” At that moment, her bestsel ler, “Mazes and Monsters,” was born, and next fall, CBS will bring it to television. It’s an eerie tale — evocative of Rod Serling’s old “Twilight Zone” — but like the best of the strange, it is anchored firmly in truth. The truth, in this case, is a disturbing one — the proposi tion that the line between fan tasy and reality is indistinguish able for many of today’s young. For them, the “game” becomes the reality and reality fades into an irritating dream. In Jaffe’s view, economics and the savag ing of traditional family struc tures are responsible. “This is the first generation where people will not be able to live as well as their parents,” she said. “They grow up in a house with two cars and lots of rooms and they get married and they don’t know if they’ll ever have a house. They don’t even know if they’ll ever be able to afford a kid.” Players of “Dungeons and Dragons” don’t have to worry about such things — at least while the game is in progress. In their fantasy roles — the fighter, the wizard, the holy man, the elf — they plunge into a dark, Tol- kienesque world of adventure, danger and pursuit of treasure to be wrested by force or guile from the forces of evil as a roll of the dice and a “controller” may dictate. The real “Dungeons and Dragons” player who inspired Jaffe’s book was said to have worked out his fantasies in a labyrinth of steam tunnels be neath the college campus. No one ever will know for sure. A detective hired by his family fin ally found him wandering in a daze. He killed himself without ever telling anyone what really happened to him. Jaffe’s four protagonists use caverns near their fictional col lege for their game and carry it to a chilling conclusion. “I had to play in order to get into the spirit of it,” Jaffe said of her research for the book. “I’d never even heard of it when I read the newspaper account. “I changed certain things. In ‘Dungeons and Dragons,’ you have to be the character you roll with the dice. When I played, I rolled to be an elf and I like that. I wanted to be a er. I’m an elf in real life—v wants to he an elf in a game “I thought it would be miii more interesting if they coi pick their own characters. Thi they could go into their 01 psyches and bring out a lot things they couldn’t workout real life.” In the past two decade youngsters have worked thini out — none too successfully through an unprecedentt flocking to religious cults, dn use and fantasy. “I think they’re looking[( family stability, which haslet kind of knocked apart in the la 20 years,” Jaffe said. “The‘61 were a time when the kids ally up — there were more ofth« because of the baby boom—an decided they wanted to chaii| things. “In the ‘70s, when people disillusioned and realized tliri couldn’t change things, tl started to investigate their w: heads.
