Training horses
prof s ‘first love’
by Cathy Anderson
Battalion Reporter
Training horses may seem like a
hobby, but for Charley Palmer,
an assistant professor at Texas
A&M University, it’s a way of
life.
Every weekday morning Pal-
jmer, assistant professor of voca-
Itional instructional services in
Department of Agriculture
[Education, develops and illus-
ites instructional materials for
:ondary and post-secondary
vocational agriculture teachers
in Texas. But when noon rolls
around he heads to his 65-acre
ranch on FM Road 2776.
“A lot of my colleagues don’t
understand why anyone with a
doctorate degree would want to
train horses," said Palmer. “I
think people should do more of
he things they want to do and
ay first love is working with
jprses.”
Palmer has been training
uarter horses since 1975.
“There is a lot more security
orking for the University, but I
Ian to be running the operation
ill-time by September,” he
dd.

There is a waiting list of peo
ple wanting horses trained, he
said, and customers have been
the only source of advertise
ment.
“I guess we’re doing some
thing right as we have main
tained a full barn for the last two
years,” Palmer said. The opera
tion never handles more than 20
colts, so equal time can be given
to each.
“I don’t think a trainer can
take more than 20 and do a good
job,” he said.
Most of the stalls have runs or
exercise pens outside to allow
the horses freedom to relax, Pal
mer said.
“The most critical part in get
ting the maximum performance
from a horse is keeping them
mentally right," he said.
“I think our business is built
on honesty and our main goal is
to make money for the horse
owners.”
