Actually, Campbell has more
und to make up than he thinks
he Houston Oilers’ final three
nes. Presently, he is the third
ding rusher, 123 yards behind
w Orleans’ George Rogers and
yards behind Dallas’ Tony

™The setting in the Astrodome

Meanwhile, the Browns and
Oilers, both 5-8, try to re-kindle
enthusiasm in disappointed fans
who last year saw the teams tie for
the American Football Confer
ence Central Division title with
11-5 marks.
This year, Campbell has not run
in the same rampaging, self
destructive fashion that he did in
the past three years — something
he acknowledged^Wednesday.
“I’m not talking about our foot
ball team, but I can’t continue to
pull and drag people like I have in
the past,” he said.
Some people close to the team
say Campbell took to heart com
ments by opposing defensive play
ers who said he would have to stop
running over tacklers if he wanted
to play very long in the. NFL.
Also, before this season he was
embarrassed and disappointed
when the Oilers disclosed his con
tract ultimatum: either renegoti
ate his six-year contract in its
sefcond year and pay him $1 mil
lion a year or he wouldn t play.
The Oilers refused to renego
tiate.
Before this season, Campbell
responded in nationally televised
games with outstanding perform
ances. In his ABC-TV debut in
1978, he rushed for 199 yards and
scored four touchdowns against
Miami.

CSU board interviews
SWC assistants for job
United Press International
FORT COLLINS, Colo. —
Two Southwest Conference assis
tant coaches are leading candi
dates for the head football
coaching job at Colorado State
University.
Leon Fuller, the University of
Texas’ defensive coordinator for
five years, has appeared before a
screening committee selecting the
team’s new coach, while Steve
Sidwell, defensive coordinator at
Southern Methodist University
was the third candidate to be in
terviewed for the job.
Fuller, 43, said he was the first
to appear before the nine-member
committee. Sidwell, a 37-year-old
native of Denver, was in Fort Col
lins Wednesday as the effort to
find a replacement for Sark Arsla-
nian continued. Arslanian was
fired midway through the 1981
season, which the Rams ended
with a 0-12 record.
Dr. Bernard Jones, chairman of
the nine-member screening com
mittee, said more than 50 persons
applied for the job. He said the
committee is interviewing the top
candidates and will submit a list of
recommendations to CSU Athle
tic Director Thurman “Fum”
McGraw, who will make the final
decision.
Fuller in the past has refused
offers of head coaching jobs with
Lamar and West Texas State, and
was recommended to Colorado
State by Texas coach Fred Akers.
Sidwell, a 1962 graduate of De
nver East High School, earned
All-Big Eight Conference honors
at the University of Colorado and
was named to the academic All-
Ameriea team.
