Dickerson, who led the league in rushing with an average of 129.8 yards per game, was unanimously selected as the conference’s offen sive player of the year and the Mustangs placed six other players on either the first team offense or first team defense. In addition, Ron Meyer, the quotable coach who took over the downtrodden SMU program six years ago, was overwhelmingly chosen coach of the year by a select panel of writers and broad casters. Mcllhenny, Dickerson and James were three of the 12 under classmen chosen to the top 24 positions (including a punter and place kicker). SMU’s Eddie Garcia was named all-conference kicker for the second year in a row, one of six repeaters on this year’s team. Leading the way defensively was Kenneth Sims, Texas’ huge tackle who missed the Longhorns’ last two games with a knee injury. Sims edged Arkansas linebacker Billy Ray Smith for defensive play er of the year honors. Arkansas freshman quarterback Brad Taylor, who took over for the injured Tom Jones during the sea son, was named as newcomer of the year. Stanley Washington of TCU, who led the nation’s receivers un til having to miss the final game of the season, and Baylor’s Gerald McNeil, were selected as the re ceiving corps on the all-league team along with Houston tight end Mark Ford. Ford easily outpolled the pre season favorites for that position, Texas’ Lawrence Sampleton and Rice’s Robert Hubble. Maceo Fifer of Houston and Terry Tausch of Texas were chosen to the tackle positions while Joe Shearin of Texas joined Hartnett at guard and Mike Babb of Texas was selected at center. On defense, Baylor’s Charles Benson was picked along with Smith at the end spot, Grady Tur ner of Houston and Doug Shankle joined Moten at linebacker and Vann McElroy of Baylor and Butch LaCroix of Houston were named to backfield position with Mobley and Carter. Texas Tech’s Maury Buford was named the all-conference punter. SMU finished fourth nationally in rushing yardage with Dickerson and James becoming the first tan dem in SWC history to average more than 100 yards for the same team during the same season. They did that by alternating at the tailback position. They appeared in the backfield at the same time on less than 10 occa sions all year. In addition to its talent on offense, SMU led the nation in interceptions with 31. While Car ter and Mobley were named to the first-team defensive backfield, SMU’s Wes Hopkins was selected to the second team. All three of SMU offensive backs, along with Carter, Mobley and Hopkins, will return next season. drive Teus Office of Traffic Safety THE BATTALION Page 9 TUESDAY. DECEMBER 1. 1981 AGGIES!
