The systems, with a combined cost of $4.4 billion, are expected to survive efforts to trim the $208.5 billion defense appropriations bill. The Senate version is $7.6 billion more than Reagan asked, and $11.9 billion higher than the House version which was approved Nov. 19. “The committee supports the need for increased defense spend ing to meet the threats to U.S. national security interests in the 1980’s,” said the Senate Approp riations Committee report. “The major increase in Soviet defense spending throughout the 1970’s as well as Soviet adventur ism in Africa, Asia and Latin America pose a serious threat to U.S. security interests throughout the world,” the report said.
