Dr. ftisi'ijli ScMinenfokl, a lie- uiiral t'eiygiaplver, has lieen ini; research on the human concerning!; spat ial axxaro- asand orientation. Since 1971). Imnenlekl s three cm it nil rc‘- i|cii themes deal with periorm- anee on w ritten tests as a measure of spaeial skill compared to per formance in llit' real world, differ ences seen in hrain functions bo- txx een left- and rigght-handed peo ple, and ex idence. that show s a correlation betxx'een what happ- pens in the left and rigght hemis pheres of the hrain. Sonncnfeld is mainly concerned x\ ith spaeial skills because ggeoggra- phy inxolxes spaeial orientation and hoxx pcuiple giet alon.ig in ex- erx'day life. I'Or instance, Sonnen- feld, xx ho is left-handed, said that some people, often left-handed people, haxe a difficult time orientingsthemsedx c-s; they gget lost easily xxhether they are in the country, mountains or city. "l.eft-handedness dot's not necessarily mean you are gsoing; to hax e poor spaeial skills, Sonncn- leld said, "hut it is surprising; how often people xvho do haxe poor orientation are lelt-handed. SoniH'nfekl lias found that peo ple who do wt'll on pencil and pap- t>r h'sts ■don’t do .as. well in .real xx orld situations, and those w ho do xvcll in real xxorld situations do worst' on paper tests. Other interesting; finding;s sug;- gSc'st that a higher percentage of journalists are left-handed, which may' he because of enriched verbal skills. Also, a higher incidence of left-handedness is sometimes seen in such occupations as com puter programming, architecture and en\ honnicntal design. The tliHerfuee between 'left handers and fight-handers is, in a sense, that meir brains may he functioning differently, he said. Differences in hrain function are determined ly how left or right handers perform various kinds of tests, and hov their skills appear to he alfeeterl by the’ difference in handedness. lie said that left-handed people do all the normal things a right hander doesj only they use the right (hemisphere) side of the hrain instead of the left. More male's than female's tend to be left-handed, hut typically and traditionally, females in almost all cultures perform poorer on tests in spatial skills than males, Soiuienfekl said. Although Sftfmenfeld s research is still in progiess, he has written two papers, one on cerebral spe cialization and enx ironmental be havior and the othe'r on cert'bral correlates of enx ironmental skills. and has conducted studies record ing hrain activity at Texas A&M, Alaska and Mexico.
